Week 5 of Mental Health vs. Reality Conversations

This week’s topic will focus on Anxiety with Monika. Hicks Consulting, PLLC

Monika Hicks is a therapist and the founder of Hicks Consulting, where she helps high-achieving women break free from burnout, build healthier boundaries, and communicate their needs with confidence.

She is known for connecting clinical insight with real-life experiences, making mental health conversations both relatable and actionable. Through her work, she has supported individuals who are often seen as “the strong one,” helping them prioritize their own emotional wellness without guilt.

In addition to her clinical work, Monika partners with corporate organizations, churches, and community groups to lead engaging mental health workshops focused on stress management, emotional wellness, and effective communication.

Her mission is simple: to help people show up fully, live intentionally, and create lives that feel aligned, not just accomplished.

Catch us Sunday evening instead of Saturday.

Set your reminders for 6:00pm Sunday on IG Live!! 💚✨

I once worked with a senior leader who was brilliant, high-performing, universally respected — who told me they hadn't taken a full day off in 14 months.

Not because the company demanded it. Because they had internalized the belief that resting was falling behind.

This is one of the most common patterns I see in clinical practice: high-achieving leaders who have completely severed the connection between performance and recovery. They treat rest as a reward for finished work. Unfortunately, the work is never finished!

The clinical term is allostatic overload. The nervous system accumulates stress faster than it can discharge it. Over time, the body and mind stop tolerating what they once absorbed easily. Concentration narrows. Emotional regulation degrades. And eventually, the capacity that made someone exceptional becomes the very thing that collapses.

Burnout in leaders doesn't look like giving up. It often looks like overcontrolling, micromanaging, or becoming increasingly reactive because the system is running on fumes and defaulting to survival mode.

Recovery isn't a personal preference. It's a performance variable. And modeling it as a leader sends a signal your team will follow... in either direction.

If your organization's culture quietly punishes rest, that culture is quietly producing burnout.

What does recovery look like in your leadership culture right now?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

At Hicks Consulting, we believe healing extends beyond mere survival—it encompasses breaking cycles, making informed choices, and creating space for the life you deserve.

This month, we honor every step of the journey:
The challenging conversations
The establishment of healthy boundaries
The courage to rest
The decision to persevere

You are entitled to prioritize your mental health.
You are deserving of support.
You do not have to navigate this alone.

Let us continue to normalize the healing process, one conversation at a time.

Step outside, take a walk, and let your body breathe 🌿
Feel the breeze reset your mind and the sun kiss your skin. Nature has a way of restoring what stress tries to steal.

Movement + fresh air = clarity, energy, and peace.

Your body deserves this. Go get it. ☀️

The Depression Proof Travel Formula ✈️✨

Rest isn’t always found in a spa day.
Sometimes it looks like a passport stamp, a quiet morning in a new city, or dinner with people you love in a place you’ve never been before.

Self-care can be:
• Getting out of your routine
• Experiencing something new
• Laughing with the people who matter most
• Creating memories that refill your emotional tank

As a therapist, I remind my clients that burnout doesn’t always mean you need to slow down… sometimes it means you need a change of scenery.

The Self-Care Travel Formula:
Plan it. Budget it. Take the trip.

Your nervous system will thank you. 🌍💆🏽‍♀️
