Grief isn’t limited to death.

We recently had the opportunity to facilitate a virtual grief workshop with a faith community made up primarily of senior adults.

One of the important truths we discussed was that loss can take many forms.

For older adults, grief may accompany the death of a loved one…but death isn’t the only loss they may grieve.

They may also grieve:
• changes in their health
• loss of mobility
• loss of independence
• changes in familiar routines
• changing or lost relationships
• roles they once held
• or even the ability to do things they once did with ease.

If it mattered, losing it can produce grief.

And if you noticed the balloons on the desk…they helped us visualize how grief is what we carry internally, while mourning gives what we’re carrying somewhere to go.

And because grief doesn’t always look like sadness, recognizing what someone may be carrying matters. Sometimes what looks like withdrawal, irritability, or simply “having a hard time adjusting” may actually have grief underneath it.

That’s part of what it means to care for the whole person. We pay attention not only to what someone may need help doing, but also to what they may be carrying.

Mind. Heart. Home.
The Absolute Way. 💙

STILL WITHOUT POWER IN MEMPHIS? SAVE & SHARE THIS.

Power outages can create more than an inconvenience, especially for older adults, individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and many families who may already be navigating limited resources.

Here are a few resources to know:

💙Lost groceries purchased with SNAP?
If you are a current SNAP recipient and lost food because your electricity was off for 12 hours or more, you may be eligible for replacement SNAP benefits. Requests must be made within 10 calendar days of the food loss through the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

💙Need help finding community resources?
Dial 2-1-1 to connect with local assistance, including housing, medical, utility, and other social-service resources.

💙Know an older adult who lives alone or needs help with meals?
MIFA’s Meals on Wheels serves eligible adults 60+ who are nutritionally at risk and frail, homebound, or disabled. Call the Aging Commission of the Mid-South at 901-222-4111 to be screened for eligibility.

💙 And please check on an older adult in your life, especially someone living alone. Ask specifically what they need, not just if they’re “okay.”

A meal can be prepared.
A reminder can be given.
A task can be completed.

But sometimes what a person needs most is simply someone to sit, listen, laugh, and be present.

Companionship is care, too.

Social connection matters for emotional, cognitive, and physical health, particularly as we age.

Could someone you love benefit from a little more connection and companionship? Give us a call to learn more about our companionship services. 💙

Take a quick walk through your loved one’s home today.

Sometimes the things we’ve walked past 100 times become the very things that increase fall risk.

Look for loose rugs, dimly lit areas, cluttered walkways, and slippery bathroom surfaces. The National Institute on Aging specifically recommends addressing rugs, lighting, grab bars, and nonslip surfaces as part of making a home safer for older adults.

For many older adults, home means familiarity, independence, comfort, and connection. And sometimes, a little extra support is what helps them continue enjoying it safely.

That’s where home care can make a difference.

The National Institute on Aging notes that many older adults want to remain in their homes as they age, with the right planning and support.

Wondering if a little extra support at home could help someone you love? We’d be happy to talk through what support could look like. 💙

It’s HOT out there! 🥵

Older adults can be especially vulnerable during extreme heat. Take a moment today to check in on an older loved one or neighbor. Make sure they’re staying cool, hydrated, and have what they need.

Sometimes caring well is simply checking in.

Sunday reminder: Caring for a loved one doesn’t always mean doing everything yourself. ❤️

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your family is recognize when a little extra support could make everyone’s week a little lighter.

Home care can provide support with everyday needs while helping your loved one remain comfortable, connected, and as independent as possible at home.

And support doesn’t have to wait for a crisis.

✔️Maybe it’s a few hours of companionship.
✔️Maybe it’s respite for a family caregiver.
✔️Maybe it’s help during a transition home from the hospital.
✔️Maybe it’s simply having another caring person there.

If you’ve been wondering whether home care could benefit your family, consider this your invitation to start the conversation.

At AbsoluteCare Healthcare, we believe care should extend beyond the task, it should care for the whole person: mind, heart & home.
