Your home is more than just a building—it is where your family’s best memories are made and likely your largest financial investment. But here in Memphis, a silent destroyer could be putting that security at risk.

Tennessee is located in a high-hazard zone for termites. Because our local humidity is exactly what they love, these pests cause billions in property damage every year—damage that most homeowners insurance simply won’t cover. At It Bugs Me Pest Control, we want to help you catch them before the repair bills start stacking up.

Keep an eye out for these early warning signs around your property:
- Tiny mud tubes running along your foundation or exterior walls.
- Discarded, translucent wings on windowsills or near doorways.
- Paint that looks bubbled or mimics signs of water damage.
- Wood that sounds hollow or papery when you tap it.

With over 30 years of local expertise in the Mid-South, our team doesn't just offer a quick fix. We perform a deep root-cause analysis to find exactly how pests are getting in and solve the problem permanently. We are here to protect your home’s structural integrity and give your family the peace of mind you deserve.

Most people see one roach and think they got lucky catching the only one.

I have to tell you what that single roach really means.

Roaches are nocturnal. They avoid light and spend their time packed together in tight cracks behind your walls, under appliances, and inside cabinets. They actually prefer being crowded together in the dark.

So when one is bold enough to run across your counter in broad daylight, that roach is not exploring. It is being pushed out.

The hiding spots are full. There is no room left.

Seeing one roach during the day is like spotting the tip of an iceberg. The real problem is behind the scenes, out of sight, and likely growing fast.

I have walked into homes where the homeowner said they only saw one or two. When we pulled out the stove or opened the wall voids, there were hundreds.

That single roach is your early warning system. It is giving you a chance to act before the situation gets out of control and spreads to other rooms.

The good news is that catching it early makes treatment faster and far less invasive.

Have you ever spotted a roach during the day and wondered if you should be worried?

I inspected a backyard last week where the homeowner was battling mosquitoes all summer.

She had no pond. No pool. No obvious water sources.

But I found thousands of mosquito larvae in the saucer under her potted plant.

Here's what most people don't realize: a female mosquito only needs about a bottle cap's worth of water to lay hundreds of eggs. That's it.

In Memphis, our humidity keeps small puddles from evaporating quickly, which makes the problem worse. Water that sits for just 5 to 7 days becomes a full mosquito nursery.

I regularly find hidden breeding spots in places homeowners walk past every day:

Clogged rain gutters
Flower pot saucers
Old tires in the garage
Plastic toys left in the yard
Anything that collects rainwater

The good news? You have more control over this than you think.

After a rainstorm, walk your property and tip over anything holding water. It takes five minutes and eliminates the root cause before mosquitoes ever hatch.

You're not just fighting mosquitoes. You're stopping them from existing in the first place.

Most people think rodents in the attic are just a noise problem.

They're not.

Here's what most homeowners don't realize: a rodent's front teeth grow up to 5 inches per year. To survive, they have to gnaw constantly to file them down.

And in your crawlspace or attic, the material with just the right resistance is often the insulation around your electrical wiring.

That exposes live wires. Creates a fire hazard you can't see or smell. In fact, many house fires labeled as undetermined cause are traced back to rodent damage that went unnoticed.

But the risk doesn't stop there.

As rodents move through your home, they leave behind micro-droplets of urine and droppings. These can carry pathogens like Salmonella and Hantavirus. And when your HVAC system kicks on, those particulates get circulated through the air your family breathes every single day.

I see this often in homes where families had no idea anything was wrong. Just some scratching sounds at night. Maybe a few droppings in the garage.

The truth is, rodent activity is rarely just a nuisance. It's a preventable threat hiding in plain sight.

Have you ever found signs of rodents in your home and wondered what damage might already be done?

A mouse only needs an opening the size of a dime to get into your home.

Not a basketball. Not even a golf ball. A dime.

For rats, it's a quarter.

I see homeowners every week who walk around their property looking for obvious holes or damage. They check their foundation, inspect their attic, and assume everything looks fine.

But mice don't need obvious.

They slip through brick weep holes. They find the tiny gap where your HVAC line enters the siding. They discover unsealed roof returns you didn't even know existed. They take advantage of worn weather stripping on your garage door.

These entry points are hidden in the shadows of your eaves, tucked behind landscaping, or buried in construction features that were never sealed properly in the first place.

Most people walk right past them every single day.

The truth is, your home might have vulnerabilities you simply cannot see without the right training and tools. During our inspections, we use high-intensity lighting to locate these micro-breaches that the untrained eye misses. Then we seal them with rodent-proof materials like copper mesh and industrial sealant.

Knowing where to look is half the battle.

Have you ever found an entry point in your home that surprised you? Where was it hidden?

The holidays are almost here, and your home is about to become the center of family gatherings.

But here's something most people overlook while planning menus and decorating: this is also the season when pests are most actively seeking warmth and food sources inside homes.

I've seen too many homeowners discover unwanted visitors right when guests are arriving. The good news? A little preparation now saves you from stress later.

Here's what I recommend checking before your first gathering:

Inspect and seal any gaps around doors and windows. Even small openings are invitations.

Clean and organize storage areas. Cluttered spaces are prime hiding spots.

Check your attic and crawl space for signs of rodent activity. They're looking for warm places just like your guests.

Trim vegetation away from your home's exterior. Overgrown plants create highways for pests.

Ensure proper drainage around your foundation. Standing water attracts more than just mosquitoes.

Inspect firewood storage if you're planning cozy fires. Logs often harbor spiders and roaches.

The truth is, most pest problems are preventable when you catch them early. A professional inspection before the holiday rush gives you one less thing to worry about during the busiest weeks of the year.

Your home should be a place where everyone feels comfortable and safe.

What's the first thing you're tackling on your holiday prep list?

I've seen homeowners set the same traps in the same spots for months.

Catch a mouse. Reset. Catch another. Reset. Repeat.

Here's what most people don't realize: traps don't solve rodent problems. They just manage them.

Think of it like bailing water from a sinking boat without ever plugging the hole. You might keep up for a while, but you're fighting a battle you can't win.

Rodents are social animals. Where you see one, there's usually a family nearby. And every time you catch one, the rest of the colony learns to avoid that trap. They even release distress signals that warn others to steer clear.

Meanwhile, new rodents keep entering through the same gaps in your foundation, roofline, or vents.

I've walked through hundreds of attics, and the story is always the same. Traps scattered everywhere. But not a single entry point sealed.

Real elimination starts with finding where they're getting in. Once those structural vulnerabilities are identified and sealed, the infestation stops at the source.

You can keep resetting traps. Or you can finally plug the hole.

What's been your experience with rodent control? Have you found yourself in this same cycle?

I heard it again last night. That scratching sound above the bedroom ceiling.

If you're hearing it too, you're not imagining things.

As Memphis temperatures drop each fall, mice and rats move indoors looking for warmth. Your attic and crawl spaces become their new home. And here's what most people don't realize: this problem escalates fast.

Rodents don't just make noise. They contaminate surfaces and food with droppings that carry bacteria. They chew through materials, including electrical wiring, which creates a very real fire risk in your home.

I've learned that the warning signs are straightforward: scratching sounds at night, droppings in storage areas, or gnawed materials.

What actually solves this? Not quick fixes or traps alone.

Real exclusion work. That means finding every entry point, some as small as a dime, sealing them permanently, and safely removing the animals already inside.

When you address the root cause instead of just treating symptoms, the scratching stops. Your home feels like yours again.

And honestly, that peace of mind matters more than anything when you have kids and pets depending on a safe space.

Have you been hearing scratching sounds in your home lately? What time of night does it usually happen?
