Natural Pest Remedies for Indoors

We already posted about some plants that you can place around the outside of your home that can help minimize pest activity, but today we want to talk about some indoor aids that can help make the inside less hospitable for anything that might make it through the outer barrier.

There are certain oils you can diffuse to keep bugs to a minimum as well as make your house smell great!
Here are some oils to help minimize certain pest problems:
Roaches-eucalyptus and tea tree
Ants-peppermint, spearmint, and lemon
Mosquitos-peppermint, lemongrass, and tea tree

Not All Bugs Are Bad Bugs!
Pill Bugs A.K.A. Rolly Pollies

We've all seen and played with those little bugs that roll up into tiny balls. They can definitely be a nuisance when there are too many of them in or around the home, but there are also many benefits to having those little guys around

They are a decomposer of the earth. If you have a compost pile, consider adding some to it as they break down decaying plant matter which returns nutrients to the soil faster than normal.
They can help rid heavy metals from the soil such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic. As these metals are digested, they crystallize in the Rolly Pollies with no harm to them at all.
So if you see these guys around, consider keeping them in a compost bin or out in your garden.

RODENTS
Now that winter is over and spring has finally sprung, you may be seeing some exterior damage caused by rodents.
You may see trails in your yard, nests up around the home, and possibly damage to the home itself from them trying to get inside and warm up.
Some things you can do to help mitigate rodent activity around the home include:
1) Remove water and food sources. If you have leaks or standing water, be sure to get them taken care of. Garbage cans outside need to be properly sealed and access points minimized.
2) Find and eliminate nesting spaces: leaf piles, grass or plant buildup, and boxes or clutter that can provide shelter for them
3) Seal entryways to the home. Be sure to pay extra attention to holes where pipes or wires enter the structure, garage door seals, and weather strips on exterior doors.
4) Call us! We have several options to help get rid of rodent activity! Whether it be outdoor bait boxes or interior trapping, let a professional take care of your rodent problems!

Termites though...

While Utah may not see the kind of termite activity that other regions can, we've seen enough activity that it's certainly worth mentioning. If you're one of the unlucky ones, you know that termite repairs can end up costing you thousands of dollars in repairs.

Here are some steps you can take to be proactive toward minimizing termite activity in and around your home:

- Keep firewood or decaying wood away from any structures on the property.

- Water seal any exposed wood around the home to minimize decay or wood rot. (termites love this kind of wood because it's soft and easy to chew through)

- Treat the home on a regular schedule to help deter nearby activity.

- Remove any standing water from the property. These are carbon-based beings, after all. They need water to survive. Take the water away, they'll go somewhere else to find it.

- Schedule an annual termite inspection with a licensed professional (That's us! We have one of those!)

Just letting everyone know that we're just waiting on the last few hurry-up-and-wait things before we can officially start treatments!

Please feel free to reach out and ask about scheduling anytime, but be aware that we don't always know how long it'll take to get the green light from the powers that be.

We want to do this right and we want to do this well.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

As the snow finally starts to melt, be sure to take a good look around your entire home for cracks or crevices in the foundation that may have formed over winter with all the moisture and freezing temperatures.
One of the easiest ways to help minimize pest activity indoors is to caulk these openings before they get too big!

Remember, as things start to warm up and the snow begins to melt, there are some things you can do to help fight off the spring pests. Cleaning your rain gutters and eliminating any standing water will help to keep mosquitos to a minimum!

Also, removing any yard clippings or fallen leaves from around your home will minimize the proliferation of unwanted pests by denying them food and shelter!
