👉 “Grant work is one more thing on my plate.”

A lot of nonprofit professionals I’ve heard from lately are saying the same thing:

I get it. I’ve been there.

What helped me wasn’t doing more—it was having a clear process:
âś” Finding the right funders
âś” Writing proposals that are actually competitive
âś” Building budgets that hold everything together

So I created my All About Grant Writing® course to teach exactly that.

And through May 8, it’s 30% off (code: AAGW30).

If grant work feels overwhelming right now—you’re not alone.

In each 10-30 minute lesson (10 hours total), you will discover a simple, streamlined process that saves you time and gets your organization all the funding they need to do important work for your community, and the world!

If your grant proposals aren’t getting funded, it may not be the work.

It may be how it’s being communicated.

One section I see organizations struggle with most:

👉 The project description

When it’s not clear:
Who you’re serving
What you’re doing
What will change

…it’s hard for funders to say yes.

A simple shift:

➡️ We will serve [who], by doing [what], resulting in [specific outcome].

Clear always wins, especially in a competitive funding environment.

And don’t forget -- the budget needs to back it all up.

More on that soon.

Quick Challenge: send me one clear sentence using the strucuture above in the comments...

You don’t need a paid grant database to find funding.

I know…that’s not what most people think.

One of the biggest frustrations I hear is:
“We need funding, but we don’t want to pay for a subscription.”

The good news? You don’t have to.

Here are 3 simple ways to find funders for free:

1) Start local
Look at who is already funding work in your community.
Annual reports, community foundations, and even local news can give you valuable insight into who is funding what—and at what level.

2) Use IRS Form 990s
Private foundations list their grants publicly.
This is one of the most underused (and free) ways to see who they fund, for what, and how much.

3) Focus on alignment first
Instead of asking “Are we eligible?”
Start with “Is this a strong fit?”

That shift alone can save you a lot of time.

Quick reminder:
You don’t need hundreds of opportunities.
You need the right ones.

Curious—what’s been the most frustrating part of finding funding lately?

04/20/2026

A few weeks ago, I asked everyone on my email list what they need most right now when it comes to funding and grant writing.

AND now I'm asking you...please respond in the comments below!

Here’s what I’m hearing so far:

- Capacity is stretched thin

- Development work is being spread across already full roles, with no dedicated time or person to focus on it (I see this all the time!)

- It’s hard to know where to focus

- There’s uncertainty around where funding is headed and which opportunities are actually worth pursuing (especially with government grants)

- Finding funders is frustrating (Especially without paying for subscription tools)

- Eligibility is a barrier - some of you are getting deep into applications, only to realize at the end that you don’t qualify

If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This is a challenging environment right now.

A few things I want to offer right away...

1) More selective grant work is better than more volume

It’s not about finding more grants—it’s about focusing on the ones with the strongest alignment (and possible multi-year grants).

2) You don’t have to rely entirely on paid databases

There are other ways to identify funders that can be just as effective when used well.

3) Capacity is real and it needs a practical approach

Simplifying your strategy and focusing your effort can make a big difference in helping you save time with this work.

Over the next few posts, I’ll share a few practical strategies around:

- - Finding funders more efficiently
- - Avoiding common dead ends
- - Strengthening proposals in a more competitive environment

My goal is to help you bring in more funding without adding more overwhelm.

Thanks again to those who shared what’s going on. I really appreciate it. And I'm still listening so please add your comment below...

“But isn’t AI evil?”

That’s a question I hear more often than you might think.

And honestly—it’s a fair one.

The headlines can make AI sound scary or out of control.

But here’s the truth:

AI isn’t inherently "bad". It's powerful.

And like any powerful tool, it can be misused—or it can be used to make a real difference.

That’s why I’m teaching a live workshop:
👉 Practical AI for Fundraising and Grant Writing

🗓️ December 8, 2025 | 1:00–2:30 p.m. ET

This will be my last workshop of the year—and maybe the most important one yet.

We’ll talk about how nonprofits can:
âś… Use AI responsibly, without losing their authenticity or voice
âś… Use it efficiently, to save time and reduce burnout
âś… Use it for good, to strengthen fundraising, write better grants, and reach more people

AI is here...and it can help us amplify what we already do best: change lives.

If you want to step into 2026 ahead of the curve—and confident about how to use these tools wisely—this session is for you.

Future-proof your nonprofit! Learn how to use AI tools and prompting techniques to make fundraising and grant writing easier in 2026.

Exciting news — I’ve been recertified as a GPC (Grant Professional Certified) through Grant Professionals Certification Institute!

I’ve proudly held my GPC since 2016, and with only about 600 GPCs across the U.S. and Canada, it’s an honor to be part of such a dedicated and passionate community of professionals.

Many people don’t realize that the grant profession has its own nationally accredited certification—a rigorous process that reflects a deep commitment to ethical standards, professional excellence, and lifelong learning.

For me, this isn’t just a credential; it’s a way to ensure I’m bringing the highest level of expertise to the organizations and communities I serve. 💙

âś… Calculate the true cost of your project
âś… Obtain (unrestricted) general operating funds
âś… Write a clear, compelling budget narrative
âś… Use AI tools to save hours on the process

📌 You’ll get the full recording + materials, even if you can’t attend live.
