The best spot for the house wasn't the best spot for the water.

On this Oklahoma ranch, the landowners had already picked where the house would go. We surveyed it - and the water wasn't underneath. So we moved down to the bottom of the valley and found a reliable source instead.

It takes a little more to get that water back up to the house site. But the alternative is drilling a dry hole, then drilling again anyway. The survey saves that second drill bill - and saves the land from a hole it never needed.

Thinking about a well on a new piece of land? Before you drill - before you even make the offer - you can check the water.

Pull up any address in Texas on our map and see the drilling success rate for that area: the share of nearby drills that found a well pumping more than 5 gallons a minute for more than 8 hours straight. It won't promise what your spot will do - it's a signal, not a guarantee - but it's a real number to plan around.

Oklahoma ranch last week. The landowners were planning a new home site and needed a reliable water source for the property.

We started the survey where the house was going to go. Didn't find much there. Pulled up the results on the laptop right there in the field and walked the ranchers through it, then moved down to the bottom of the valley. Found a real source.

More effort to get the water back up to the house. But the alternative is drilling a hole at the home site that comes up dry, then drilling another one anyway. The survey saves that second drill bill - and saves the land from a hole it didn't need.

Out in Martin County last week, running a survey for a pivot farm. Before we drove out, we did a little homework using our database of Texas wells.

The county has a 78% success rate on drilling projects. Sounds good until you realize that means 22% of drills come up unsuccessful if you don't use any tech to look for the water first.

A pivot farm needs 75+ gpm. The industrial average in the county is around 170 ft. But the real question isn't how deep, it's where on the property. North side at 75 gpm, south side at 150 gpm potential. Same property, very different outcomes.
