For years the deal was this: the Military trusted you to drive a 5-ton through a sandstorm at 19, but the DMV wanted to watch you back into a parking spot before they'd believe you could do it.
That got better this week.

The skills test waiver went from 12 months after separation to 24. Drove anything 2.5 ton or bigger? You can skip the CDL road test. You already took that test. In worse weather. With a worse mirror.
Even Exchange added seven states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Wyoming. That's 34 now. In those states you trade your military license for a civilian CDL. No written, no road test.
The GI Bill covers up to 100% of CDL tuition. VR&E covers the whole thing if you've got a service-connected disability.
SkillBridge lets you train during your last six months of active duty — the one and only time the military will let you leave early for something useful.
Over 40,000 people have already used the skills waiver. If you got out in 2025 and figured you missed the window, go dig the DD-214 out of the shoebox. You're back in.

Now the part nobody puts on a poster. Getting licensed is the easy half. Running under your own authority means USDOT number, MC authority, BOC-3, UCR, IFTA, IRP, drug and alcohol testing, driver qualification files, and an FMCSA audit in your first 12 months. Four different agencies. Same hurry-up-and-wait you already know, except now nobody's standing there telling you it's due.
