April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol misuse is responsible for more than 140,000 deaths in the U.S. each year—but behind every number is a person, a story, and a life that matters.

At Southworth Associates, we want you to know this: recovery isn’t a solo journey—it’s built on connection, accountability, and support. It’s late-night check-ins, honest conversations, small wins, and people who remind you who you are when you forget.

Whether you’re just beginning, actively in the process, or quietly wondering if it’s time—there is a community here for you. There is support. There is hope.

You are seen. You are supported. And you never have to walk this road by yourself.

April is National Counseling Awareness Month.

In recovery, healing doesn’t happen alone—and it doesn’t happen overnight. Counseling is one of the most powerful tools we have to rebuild, reflect, and reconnect with who we truly are.

At Southworth Associates, we see every day how vital mental health support is—not just for sobriety, but for creating a life that feels stable, meaningful, and whole. Counseling provides a safe space to unpack the hard things, develop healthy coping skills, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

To the counselors who walk alongside individuals in their most vulnerable moments—thank you. Your work changes lives.

To those in our program putting in the work, showing up, and doing the hard inner healing—we see you, and we are so proud of you.

And to those who may be struggling in silence: you are not alone, and help is here when you’re ready. Reaching out could be the first step toward everything changing.

Healing is possible. Support matters. And you deserve both.

Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 teens report using illicit drugs at least once before graduating high school—and early use significantly increases the risk of long-term addiction?

It’s National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, and at Southworth Associates, we’re here to remind you that knowledge is power—especially when it comes to protecting our youth and supporting recovery.

Addiction doesn’t happen overnight. It often begins with curiosity, peer pressure, or coping with stress, anxiety, or trauma. But the earlier we start honest conversations, the stronger we can build awareness, prevention, and healthier coping strategies.

Sobriety isn’t just about saying no—it’s about saying yes to clarity, mental wellness, stronger relationships, and a future you’re proud of.

If you or someone you love is struggling, you are not alone. Support is here, healing is possible, and your story is still being written.

Let’s educate, uplift, and empower—because facts matter, and so do you.

Sleep isn’t just rest… it’s recovery.

During Sleep Awareness Week, we’re reminded that healing the mind and body requires something many of us in recovery once struggled with: consistent, restorative sleep.

When you’re in active addiction, sleep is often chaotic, disrupted, or completely absent. But in recovery, rebuilding healthy sleep habits can be one of the most powerful tools for long-term sobriety.

Sleep supports emotional regulation, decision-making, and mental clarity — all things that are critical when navigating sobriety and the recovery journey.

At Southworth Associates, we know recovery isn’t just about removing substances. It’s about rebuilding a healthy life, one habit at a time.

March is Self-Harm Awareness Month.

Self-harm is often misunderstood. It’s not about attention—it’s about pain that someone doesn’t yet have the tools to express or process. Behind the behavior is usually someone trying to cope with overwhelming emotions, trauma, anxiety, depression, or feeling completely alone.

Who does self-harm affect?
Anyone. Teens, adults, healthcare professionals, parents, students, friends—people from every background. Many individuals who struggle with self-harm are also battling mental health challenges, addiction, or recovery-related stress.

Signs to look out for:
• Wearing long sleeves even in warm weather
• Frequent unexplained cuts, burns, or bruises
• Isolating from friends or loved ones
• Talking about feeling numb, hopeless, or overwhelmed
• Keeping sharp objects nearby or hidden
• Sudden mood changes or increased secrecy

Why do people self-harm?
For some, it’s a way to release emotional pain. For others, it’s about feeling something when they feel numb, regaining a sense of control, or coping with trauma, shame, or stress.

What can you do if you notice the signs?
Start with compassion. Listen without judgment. Let them know they’re not alone and that their pain matters. Encourage them to talk to a professional who can help them find safer ways to cope.

Healing is possible. Recovery is possible. And asking for help is one of the bravest things a person can do.

If you or someone you love is struggling, professional help is available. Therapists, recovery programs, and mental health professionals are here to support you every step of the way.

Eating Disorder Awareness Week is a powerful reminder that our relationship with food is deeply connected to our mental health. Eating disorders are not just about food—they are complex conditions that impact emotional well-being, self-worth, physical health, and daily functioning.

For many individuals, disordered eating patterns can become intertwined with anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use. The long-term effects can include heart complications, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and lasting impacts on brain health. But just as importantly, they can also affect how someone shows up in their relationships, their work, and their recovery journey.

In the world of sobriety and recovery, nourishment matters. Learning to fuel your body consistently and compassionately can stabilize mood, reduce cravings, and support overall healing. Recovery is not just about removing harmful substances—it’s about rebuilding a healthy, sustainable lifestyle, and that includes your relationship with food.

If you or someone you love is struggling, know this: help is available, healing is possible, and you are not alone. Small steps toward balance, nourishment, and self-compassion can create meaningful change.

This week—and every week—let’s continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support one another in all aspects of recovery.

January is Mental Wellness Month — a time to focus on what we can do before stress or burnout takes hold.

At Southworth Associates, we believe mental wellness is built through proactive self-care, stress reduction, and strengthening resilience — one day at a time. Mental health and substance use are deeply connected, and addressing both early can make all the difference.

Support, accountability, and timely interventions aren’t signs of weakness — they’re tools for stability, growth, and long-term wellness. Whether it’s monitoring, structured support, or compassionate intervention, having the right systems in place helps people stay grounded, focused, and supported through life’s challenges.

This month, we encourage a check-in — with yourself, with your support network, and with the habits that protect your mental health. Wellness is a practice, not a destination.
