Yay!! It’s FRIDAY!!! Are you ready for the weekend? I am posting something to think about as you enter the weekend. The theme this week is procrastination and hopefully what I wrote for you will help in some way.
Procrastination...
Have you ever found yourself distracted by the “Instant gratification monkey.” It may be easy to be sidetracked by more entertaining things, things that grab your attention. Before long, you may investigate the migration pattern of the Monarch butterfly, or watching TikTok for hours, hyper focusing on something interesting – more interesting than the looming task you don’t want to do.
Sometimes procrastination stems from living too much in the moment, concentrating on the easy and fun tasks or experiences. The need for short term instant gratification is stronger than the need to maintain progress toward something more substantial, something that requires a little bit of sacrifice in the moment. Unfortunately, too much procrastination can trigger guilt, shame, frustration, negative self-talk, and lower motivation in maintaining forward motion.
The “Panic Monster” can be a procrastinators ally. This character shows up just before a deadline, ignites motivation, clear thinking, and tons of energy. All of sudden you may you’re yourself cancelling plans with friends, staying up all night, and neglecting self-care to finish a project. This panic represents the fear of potentially failing, risk of being judged, and can be a very strong motivator.
This type of procrastination is somewhat contained by an end date or deadline. But there is another form of procrastination that can actually prove to be more difficult to manage. This type of procrastination is not contained, there is no looming deadline. Things like starting an exercise plan, reaching out to friends and family, setting goals for selfcare, etc. After time passes the only consequence is loneliness, your health, and your relationships; leaving you to suffer quietly and privately, causing a huge source of regret. Over time, this type of procrastination may make you feel like a a spectator in their own life.
What are some areas in your life that you feel you procrastinate on?
Which ones don’t have a deadline, but are important enough to start making it a priority in your life?
What steps can you take today to improve?
