When a new coach shows up, a crew doesn't start by listening. They start by deciding whether he's full of it.

And honestly, they've earned that. Every good crew has watched consultants come in, talk big, and disappear. So our coaches do the opposite. They don't kick the door open. They learn names and jobs first. They find the person the crew actually watches during the safety meeting, because that's who sets the tone for everybody.

One of our coaches, Jim Gray, described a hard hitch offshore like this: “I ate a lot of food in the galley on my own.” You sit there until the crew decides you're worth talking to. A crew that our coach Dallas Bozeman works with put it another way about the other companies they'd tried: “They would have never came and sat around the table with us.” That right there is the difference.

That difference is the whole job, and it's the part our coaches love most.

A clean safety record feels like proof the system is working. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it just means nothing has gone wrong yet.

In special operations we had a truth: you cannot build the capability after the emergency starts. If you are lucky instead of good, you find that out the hard way, and by then it is too late to go back and do what you should have been doing all along.

Same thing on a rig. Good crews are proactive. They coach, they debrief, they watch the leading indicators before anything happens. Lucky crews are reactive. They learn where the gaps were by investigating after.

If there is even a little wink that you might be lucky, get on the front end of it.

People think leadership coaching is about teamwork and communication. It is. And our coaches are phenomenal at it.

But ask them what the work really looks like out there, and you hear something different.

We see it everywhere we go. The best equipment money can buy, the newest software on every screen, and the crew running all of it is the last line in the budget.

Same rigs. Same iron. Completely different results. The difference is always the people. That's the work our coaches get to do every day, and it's why we love it.

Our COO Clayton Boyd, a former Navy SEAL, took a question to Mississippi State that every leader runs into: what actually builds a high-performing culture?

He brought it down to three ingredients, and the clip walks through all of them. The one he cares about most is radical accountability, where you trade the blame game for everybody having each other’s backs.
