It is with deep sorrow that the National Guild of Hypnotists announces the passing of our beloved founder and guiding force, Dr. Dwight Damon.
Dr. Damon’s journey with the NGH began in 1950 when, as a young college student, he met NGH originator Rexford L. North. Captivated by the potential of hypnosis, he became an early advocate and contributor to the Guild’s mission. While the NGH laid foundational steps in the mid-20th century, it was Dr. Damon’s leadership—especially when he revitalized the organization in 1986—that shaped the modern NGH and set us on the transformative path we continue to follow today.
Born in 1932 in Nashua, New Hampshire, Dr. Damon had a natural presence before audiences. By age 13, he had earned the title of "New England’s Youngest Professional Magician" and was recognized in the Who’s Who of New England Entertainment. His passion for performance evolved into a lifelong dedication to hypnosis, which deepened during his service in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he was often sought out for his hypnotic skill.
In 1959, Dr. Damon earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Even during his chiropractic studies, he remained committed to both hypnosis and magic—performing at public events and even once driving blindfolded as part of a demonstration.
Throughout his remarkable life, Dr. Damon achieved an extraordinary list of accomplishments. Since the rebirth of the NGH in 1986, he dedicated himself to building the world’s largest hypnosis membership organization—promoting safe, ethical, and professional standards in the field. His unwavering vision was to elevate hypnosis as a separate and distinct profession—a respected and practical tool for helping people overcome everyday challenges.
Dr. Damon ensured that his legacy would live on through the NGH’s leadership structure, involving both family members and long-time professionals within its Cabinet and Advisory Boards. His family, devoted to his passion and mission, remains committed to carrying forward his vision.
He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Damon-Huard and Holly Damon; his son, Eric Damon; daughter-in-law, Lisa Damon; grandson, Jereme Bachand; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We honor Dr. Dwight Damon’s lifelong dedication, visionary leadership, and enduring impact. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of hypnotists and professionals worldwide.
