51 years ago today the crew of Apollo 17 left the lunar surface, ending humanity's presence on the Moon after six successful landings over three years.

Gene Cernan was the last person to leave footprints in lunar soil. Cernan shared his memories of that moment in our sister film, 'The Last Man on the Moon':

“I looked down at my footprints and I knew I wasn’t coming this way again... I wanted to press the freeze button. I wanted to stop time. I really wanted to reach out, put it in my hand, stick it in my space suit and bring it home - and show it to everybody. This is what it feels like. This is what it looks like.”
