These are four things I’d personally never do to my hair—and here’s why:
❌ Refresh faded color with permanent color
Permanent color lifts and deposits color. Repeatedly using it to “freshen up” previously colored hair can lead to unnecessary dryness, uneven color, and excessive warmth over time. If I simply wanted to refresh tone and shine, I’d reach for an acid-based glaze instead.
❌ Tell my stylist, “Do whatever you want”
Even the best stylist isn’t a mind reader. Before any appointment, I like to know what I want, what I don’t want, how much maintenance I’m willing to do, and what my goals are. The more direction you provide, the better your chances of loving the result.
❌ Go from blonde to dark in one appointment
Most blondes who think they want to go dark don’t actually want to be dark. They want more depth, dimension, shine, or lower maintenance. Before making a major color change, I’d always test-drive the look first.
❌ Skip demineralizing treatments as a blonde
If you have hard water, minerals can build up on the hair and leave blonde hair looking dull, darker, or brassier than it should. This is one of the most overlooked reasons blonde hair stops looking bright.
After 24 years as a hair colorist, one thing I’ve learned is that healthy, beautiful hair is usually the result of good decisions repeated over time—not quick fixes.
