During Pedestrian Safety Month, it is important to recognize how distractions are changing the way pedestrians navigate our communities. With phones, headphones and other devices competing for attention, drivers need to remain alert - especially in school zones.

A recent survey found that 75% of parents and caregivers have observed a distracted student in a school zone. Seventy-three percent have seen students texting or looking down at a phone, while more than half have observed students listening to music, talking on the phone or crossing the street without looking.

In school zones and anywhere pedestrians are present, drivers should slow down, eliminate distractions and be prepared to stop. Keeping pedestrians safe starts with staying focused behind the wheel.

The latest national data offers encouraging signs for pedestrian safety. According to NHTSA, overall traffic fatalities declined nearly 7% in 2025, while the Governors Highway Safety Association reported that pedestrian deaths fell for the third consecutive year.

These improvements show that progress is possible, but too many people are still losing their lives on our roads. Continued investment in proven safety strategies, including automated enforcement, public education, and safer infrastructure, can help communities build on this momentum.

This Pedestrian Safety Month, every driver can help make our roads safer by slowing down, staying alert and watching for pedestrians.

Recent debate around automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems has raised important questions about cameras, license plates and privacy. While ALPR systems and automated traffic safety programs may use similar technology, they are designed for different purposes.

Automated enforcement is built to improve road safety. Speed, red-light and school bus stop-arm programs address specific dangerous driving behaviors, with the goal of encouraging drivers to follow traffic laws and reducing violations over time.

Our recent survey found:
• 56% have witnessed speeding in school zones.
• 49% have seen distracted driving.
• 43% have witnessed a near-miss involving a child.

California is entering a new chapter in roadway safety, and Verra Mobility brings experience where it matters most.

Speeding and red-light running are dangerous driving behaviors that put everyone on the road at risk. Automated safety programs give cities another tool to encourage safer driving and help protect their communities.

Independent research provides compelling evidence that school zone speed safety programs can change driver behavior.

A study from the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, evaluated Verra Mobility-operated programs across 18 school zone speed cameras in St. Cloud and Osceola County.

The findings:
• Speeding violations declined by 97%
• Warning notices alone reduced violations by 93%
• Many individual school zones saw reductions exceeding 95%
