The biggest challenge in mining innovation isn't the technology. It's changing the mindset.

The technology is there.

But getting people to trust something new?

That's the real challenge.

For generations, exploration has followed a familiar process, and there is a reason those methods have been used for so long — they are proven, familiar, and built into the way many professionals were trained.

But the problem is that exploration is still a high-risk business.

According to Westwood Global Energy Group's latest State of Exploration report, the industry is becoming increasingly selective about where — and whether — to drill.

Here are a few statistics that stand out:

• Only 64 high-impact exploration wells were completed in 2025: the lowest annual total since Westwood began tracking global exploration in 2008.

• Across 2021–2025, 373 high-impact wells delivered a commercial success rate of approximately 30%, meaning nearly 7 out of every 10 wells failed to become commercial discoveries.

• Frontier exploration averaged only a 13% commercial success rate, highlighting the challenges of evaluating entirely new petroleum plays.

• In ultra-deepwater environments, only 2 of 37 high-impact wells drilled between 2021 and 2025 resulted in commercial discoveries, a success rate of just 5%.

The industry's challenge is no longer access to capital. Increasingly, it is the limited inventory of attractive exploration opportunities and the need to make better drilling decisions before significant capital is committed.

As remaining prospects become deeper, more technically complex, and more expensive to evaluate, the value of additional subsurface intelligence before drilling continues to grow.

I've spent over 20 years looking at subsurface data, and I still remember the first "successful" discovery that never made money. We proved the hydrocarbons were there — but the reservoir was tight, permeability was poor, and by the time we understood that, we'd already spent the budget that should've gone toward figuring it out first.

That happens more than anyone likes to admit. Usually it's not that the geology was wrong — it's that we didn't know enough about it early enough.

Conventional reservoirs are forgiving. But most of what we're chasing now — tight oil, shale gas, heavy oil, coalbed methane — isn't. Frac jobs, horizontal wells, EOR, more wells than planned: every one is a sound technical fix and a real financial risk.

After two decades, here's what I believe:

The projects that go well aren't the ones with the best rock. They're the ones where the team understood the rock before committing capital to it.

Where are the hydrocarbon-bearing zones?
How deep, how extensive?
How complicated will production actually be?
Is this commercially viable, or are we fooling ourselves?
Where does the first drilling dollar really belong?

Most of those answers exist in the subsurface long before anyone spuds a well. The question is whether you have access to them yet.
