The best time to talk about care is before your family is in crisis.

That’s the message Dr. Ricardo Febry, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Care Associates, shares in the newest issue of Jim Pittman’s Caregiver Conversations™.

As a loved one’s needs change, families may have more choices than they realize. Adult Day Health Care, home care, dementia support, care navigation, palliative care and hospice can all provide different kinds of support at different times.

And asking for help doesn’t mean you’re giving up your role as a caregiver. Sometimes, the right support is what makes it possible to keep caring for someone you love.

Dr. Febry encourages families to start the conversation early. Talk about what is changing. Ask what your loved one wants. Be realistic about what your family can manage. And learn about available resources before you urgently need them.

You don’t have to wait for a crisis to start planning what comes next.

Sometimes the people holding a family together are being pulled in two directions at once.

Dr. Juliana Menasce Horowitz, writing for Pew Research Center, reports that 54% of Americans in their 40s are part of the “sandwich generation.” They are helping an aging parent while also raising a child or supporting an adult child. For many families, caregiving is happening on both ends at the same time.

That can mean helping Mom or Dad with appointments, medications and daily needs while also caring for children, working and managing everything else life brings. When Alzheimer’s or another dementia becomes part of the journey, the demands can grow even greater. Love may drive caregiving. But love does not make caregiving easy.

At Care Associates, we believe no family should have to navigate that journey alone. Through dementia care, the Medicare GUIDE program, senior care navigation, personal home care and adult day health care, we help Greater New Orleans families find the right support and help caregivers carry the load.

As people are living longer and many young adults struggle to gain financial independence, 23% of U.S. adults are in the “sandwich generation.”

Most caregiving crises don’t begin as crises.

They build quietly.

A little more help with medications. More appointments. Meals. Transportation. Supervision.

Families adjust and keep going, often without realizing how much their loved one’s needs have changed.

In the next issue of Caregiver Conversations™, Care Associates Founder and Chief Medical Officer Ricardo Febry, M.Sc., M.D. shares an important message for families:

Don’t wait for a fall, hospitalization or caregiver exhaustion to start the conversation.

Start earlier than you think.

The right resource can make a difficult caregiving journey a little easier. But first, families have to know it exists.

The National Council on Aging's BenefitsCheckUp is a free tool that helps older adults, people with disabilities and their families find programs that may help with health care, prescriptions, food and other everyday expenses. It's a practical resource for families trying to understand what assistance may be available to them.

At Care Associates, we see how challenging it can be for families to navigate aging, dementia and serious illness. That's why connecting people with the right resources matters. In Greater New Orleans, Care Associates provides integrated support through Adult Day Health Care, the Medicare GUIDE dementia program, Palliative Care and Hospice, helping older adults and caregivers find the level of support that fits their needs.

No family should have to navigate the complexities of aging and caregiving alone.

When memory begins to fade, love doesn’t disappear with it.

Melissa Pineda, writing for Being Patient, shares a deeply personal reflection on loving and caring for someone living with dementia. Her story is a reminder that even as memories, abilities, and familiar routines change, the relationship still matters. Connection can remain through a familiar voice, a gentle touch, a shared moment, or simply being present.

For family caregivers, that can be both comforting and difficult. Dementia changes relationships in ways families may never have expected, and caregiving often requires learning new ways to communicate, connect, and find meaning in moments that may look different from those that came before.

Families shouldn’t have to navigate those changes without support. At Care Associates, our senior adult day health care, Medicare GUIDE program, palliative care, and hospice services are designed to support individuals and families at different points along the caregiving journey, helping caregivers find guidance, resources, and compassionate care when they need it.

Families should not have to wait for a crisis to get help.

Elizabeth Gregory, writing for The MIT Press Reader, explains why America’s care economy is under so much strain. More older adults need support, while families face high costs, limited services, and too few caregivers. Many are trying to manage work, family, and caregiving all at once.

At Care Associates, we help families find support before they feel overwhelmed. Our services include Senior Adult Day Health Care, the Medicare GUIDE Program, palliative care, hospice, and caregiver support designed to help older adults remain safe, connected, and cared for while giving families added support and peace of mind.

If you live in the Greater New Orleans area and your family is struggling to manage care for an aging loved one, you do not have to figure it out alone. Contact Care Associates to learn which services may be right for your family. Visit our website at: https://care.associates

The right guidance at the right time can change everything for a family caregiver.

Writing for AARP, Barbara Moroch and Paul Wynn explain how a geriatric care manager can help families navigate one of life's most challenging journeys. These professionals assess needs, coordinate care, connect families with community resources, and help caregivers make informed decisions while reducing stress and uncertainty. For many families, having an experienced guide can make all the difference.

The article is also a reminder that caregivers don't have to navigate this journey alone. Asking for help early can prevent crises, improve quality of life, and give families greater confidence as care needs change over time.

At Care Associates, we're committed to helping caregivers and their loved ones every step of the way. Through our Senior Adult Day Health Care, Medicare GUIDE, Palliative Care, and Hospice programs, our experienced team provides compassionate guidance, coordinated support, and personalized care that helps families find the right solutions when they need them most.

Some children spend their afternoons playing. Others spend them caregiving.

In this morning article in The New York Times, Helen Ouyang, MD, MPH shines a light on one of America's most overlooked populations: children caring for parents, grandparents, and other loved ones because our healthcare system depends so heavily on unpaid family caregivers. It's a powerful reminder that caregiving often begins much earlier than many people realize.

At Care Associates, we know that caregiving affects the entire family. Children should never have to carry these responsibilities alone. That's why connecting families with the right support, resources, and services is so important. When caregivers receive the help they need, children have more opportunity to simply be children.

The modern health care system requires the work of caregiving to fall to whoever else lives in a household — even if they’re kids.
