Do we treat wine like a religion?

In the last few years, the way I view the wine industry has changed a lot. I was talking to my colleagues about this recently, and I realised that, in my opinion, many people treat wine like a religion.

I feel like when I started in the wine industry I acted like someone who is very religious - reading, memorising and trying to teach everyone what I was learning- to "convert" them into wine lovers, like me.

This would of course be a great way to sell, if everyone joined our "religion", but not everyone wants to be fanatical about wine. And too often, the wine industry (in general) tends to make these people feel like outsiders.

The truth is, not everyone wants to know about soils, winemaking techniques, or how amazing the vineyard is. In my experience, most people (over 95%) just want to drink wine and enjoy it. So wouldn't we be better just welcoming them with open hands, instead of trying to force them to "join our religion"?

What are your thoughts?
Am I being too critical?

Or is it time to start changing our collective mindsets
