Checking in too often doesn't create accountability. It destroys initiative. ๐Ÿ“‰

Most managers face this exact dilemma:
You need results. You need follow-through. But every time you check in too frequently, engagement drops and initiative disappears.

People stop thinking for themselves and simply wait for your next instruction.

Creating true accountability without micromanaging isn't a soft leadership ideal โ€” itโ€™s a structural discipline. Done right, it builds self-driven teams that deliver consistently and escalate problems early.

In our latest article, we break down:
๐Ÿ”น Why traditional status checks trigger passive behaviour
๐Ÿ”น How to shift from tracking tasks to defining clear outcomes
๐Ÿ”น The structural framework for building ownership across your team

On our way to Austria, where we will deliver a Leadership and Management course together with our partner, OSM Partner Austria and Francesco Miraglia.

Iโ€™m looking forward to working with the team and sharing approaches that help people work with greater confidence, better organisation and a clear shared direction.

When did staying become the same thing as loyalty?
"He's been with us for 12 years. He's very loyal." Okay.

โœ”๏ธ But is he still growing?
โœ”๏ธ Is he taking on more responsibility?
โœ”๏ธ Is he contributing more to the business today than he did five years ago?

Because tenure and loyalty are not the same thing.

A loyal employee isn't simply someone who stays. They care about what happens to the company. They speak up when they see a problem, even when staying quiet would be easier.

And with experience should come greater contribution, stronger skills and more responsibility.

Long tenure shouldn't make anyone immune to feedback either. That's a pretty expensive company benefit.

As leaders, we need to distinguish between people who are growing with the business and those who have stayed in the same place while the business moved forward.

Here's the uncomfortable question: How do you define loyalty in your company - by years of service or by contribution?

Every month, our business schools bring entrepreneurs together in different cities and countries.

The goal is practical: to help business owners grow as leaders, lead their people more effectively and build stronger, more adaptable companies.

This September, our franchise partner for Germany, Katja Luedtke, will join MBS Sofia (Mind Business School) as a guest speaker.

The topic will be business agility and one question that is becoming increasingly important:

How can you keep your business adaptable when conditions are changing faster than your plans?

Katja is an independent Agile & Business Consultant and Leadership Coach based in Cologne. For more than 20 years, she has worked with organizations across different industries on organizational transformation, leadership development and building more effective teams.

For Katja, business agility is not a collection of tools or another fashionable methodology. It is a companyโ€™s ability to make better decisions, respond faster and bring out the potential of its people.

Her work helps leaders and teams move from: โ€œThis is how we have always done it.โ€
to: โ€œWhat is possible now?โ€

๐Ÿค” What actually happens during a free consultation with OSM?

You will not receive a generic presentation or a solution prepared before we have even understood your business.

And you will not be pressured to make a decision on the spot.

We begin with an honest conversation about where your company stands today, where you want it to go and what may be preventing it from getting there.

We ask questions, listen carefully and look beyond the visible symptoms to identify the real challenges affecting your people, organisation and results.

If we believe OSM can help, we will explain how. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you that too.

Curious what this conversation could reveal about your business?

Your best employees do not always leave because another company offers them more money.

They often leave because they cannot see a future, their contribution goes unnoticed, or poor management has become part of their daily work.

The good news is that improving retention does not always require a bigger HR budget. Clear roles, regular feedback, genuine recognition, and better leadership can make a much greater difference than another temporary salary increase.

In our latest article, we examine why talented employees leave and what companies can do to retain them without simply spending more.

"There are no good employees out there." โŒ

This is one of the most common complaints we hear from business owners.

But there is a much harder question we rarely ask ourselves: If the good people were already in your company, why did they leave? ๐Ÿค”

In most cases, itโ€™s not about the salary. People walk away when they:
๐Ÿ›‘ Feel undervalued and unseen for their efforts.
๐Ÿ›‘ See no clear path for personal or professional growth.
๐Ÿ›‘ Work under a manager who controls rather than leads.
๐Ÿ›‘ Are stuck in a role that doesn't align with their strengths.
๐Ÿ›‘ Lose connection with the purpose of their work.

Talent retention doesnโ€™t start when someone hands in their resignation. It starts on day one with clear expectations, regular, constructive feedback, genuine recognition. With leaders who develop people, instead of just managing tasks.

Finding talent is a challenge. Retaining them is a matter of leadership.

๐Ÿ‘‡ What do you think? What is the number one reason good employees leave a company in your experience?

๐Ÿ’ก Most problems in business aren't that complicated. They're just conversations no one wants to have. So they get postponed.
We spare someone on the team the truth, so we don't hurt them. We delay important feedback because "now isn't the right time." We grit our teeth and hope things will somehow work themselves out.
They don't. They just get bigger. And more exhausting.

At OSM International, we see this constantly - with business owners, with managers, with teams. And it's almost never a lack of solutions. What stops people is fear - fear of damaging a relationship, of looking like "the bad guy," of getting it wrong and regretting it later.

But that's exactly where the difference lies. The difference is between people who swallow their fear and have the conversation, and those who put it off one more time.
๐Ÿ‘Œ Because when you stay silent, you're actually saying something. You're telling the whole team that this behaviour is okay.

And at some point, you stop running a business. You just start putting out fires.
Each of us is carrying one of these conversations in our head right now. What's yours - the one you know you need to have, but keep avoiding?
