Are you dealing with a sudden student loan payment increase? If you are getting ready to call Mohela, Aidvantage, or your specific servicer, you need a strategy.

If you call in frustrated and screaming, it may be hard to get a positive outcome. You catch more flies with honey. The reps on the other end of the line are the experts who can manually search the system for alternative repayment plans and hardship programs to bring your payment down. Put the ball entirely in their court by doing the heavy lifting for you.

Next time you call, use this exact script:

"Hi, my name is [Name], (if you know your account number, say the next line too) and my account number is [Number].

I noticed my monthly payment recently increased to an amount that I can no longer afford. I want to ensure my account stays in good standing.

Would you please review my file and tell me what alternative repayment plans, income-driven options, or hardship programs I currently qualify for to bring this payment back down?"

🚨 STUDENT LOAN UPDATE: 1% Auto-Pay Discount Deadline EXTENDED!

If you have federal student loans, there is a massive update that will literally save you money. 💸 The Department of Education just extended the deadline for the temporary 1% interest rate reduction. You now have a three-month grace period until December 31, 2026, to enroll in auto-pay!

What does this mean for your wallet? Let’s run the numbers. 👩🏽‍🏫 If you’re carrying a balance of $30,000, you could potentially save $300 a year just by putting your payments on autopilot.

Because this discount lasts through June 2028, that is $450 kept in your pocket instead of evaporating into interest.

More of your payment is hitting the principal balance, helping you pay it off faster. 🙌🏽

If you have Direct Loans issued after July 2012, log into your servicer’s website and set up auto-pay before New Year’s Eve to lock this in.

If you’re already on auto-pay, you don’t have to do anything — you’ll get the discount automatically.
