In the present moment is where life is happening; it is also where taking action with your money must happen.

You can talk about the future you want, the wealth you desire, the trips you dream about, and even the type of house in which you would like to live, but the financial actions needed to make that future happen must occur now.

I call this: Present Moment Money

When you are operating in awareness, you realize that living within your means is not scarcity; it is living in alignment, which brings clarity.

You can also relax and more fully enjoy the present moment because you are choosing to be the boss of your money, not just a bystander.

One day your future will be your present moment, so intentionally use the now to create, build, and grow your financial wellness. By doing so, you are creating a secure future while also savoring the now.

About seven years ago a friend and I discussed how much we wanted to travel to India. We considered going on a yoga retreat and tossed around some other ideas.

Although both my friend and I travel extensively, neither of us had been to India. At the time, India seemed like a big mystery to me and a bit overwhelming to figure out how best to navigate a trip.

Before my friend and I ever planned a vacation to India, I met my partner who was born and raised in India and immigrated to the United States in his twenties.

Today, I write this post from Chennai, India. This is my fifth trip to India with my partner. I am so comfortable here now; it’s interesting how much life can change in seven years.

Travel expands your world- to me that is a basic truth. Travel is not just about changing your location; it changes you. You grow as a human being. Your mind and heart open and as my partner likes to say you become a “global citizen.”

For me, travel is one of the greatest riches in my life.

It seems simple: To be financially free, you must be financially responsible.

Yet, somehow responsibility often gets a bad rap. People want the benefit of wealth without accepting the responsibility that creates it.

Once you connect freedom with responsibility—and start taking actions that build financial security and ultimately, financial freedom—you inherently understand this connection. You will witness it working in your life.

As I spend 5 weeks in India this summer, I am free, and living my life to the fullest. My consistent financial responsibility now allows me to live as I choose. I am still responsible with money, of course, but the freedom and liberation are actively in play, and have been for years.

NOTE 🐦‍⬛: Video soundtrack is courtesy of everyday life in Chennai—thank you crows!

When I was 23, I started with zero and had a low paying job, but I was financially responsible. I did not see financial responsibility as a sacrifice; I saw it as an opportunity and an adventure.

Then watching my investments grow over the years and increasing my contributions as my salary grew, I continued to see the compounded results of financial responsibility.

Yes, I lived within my means, which is also part of overall financial responsibility, but in no way did I live a deprived life. My journey was full and joyful. Responsibility is not deprivation.

Financial Responsibility = Financial Freedom.

The first time I opened my partner’s kitchen cabinet, I saw many bottles of ayurvedic supplements from a company called Himalaya. The supplements’ names were in Sanskrit, with their health benefits printed below in English.

I was intrigued and wanted to know more.

Almost five years later, I’m on my fifth trip to India, and the Himalaya store is one of my favorite shopping destinations in Chennai. These ayurvedic supplements are now part of my daily health routine.

My partner and I stock up for a year, and I also bring home gifts for my friends in Miami. The foundation of Himalaya products is ancient nature-based wisdom. Nature is one of our greatest teachers, and I see the intersection of money and nature every day.

Himalaya intersects health, wealth, and nature.

Their supplements and personal care products are very reasonable in price, (especially if you are earning in dollars), and have made a positive difference in the health of my partner and me.

A few of my favorite supplements:

🌿 Ashwagandha: Helps Relieve Stress
🌿 Guduchi: Immunity Wellness
🌿 Trikatu: Digestive Wellness
🌿 Mentat: Mental Acuity

A few of my favorite personal care products:

🌿 Charcoal Face Wash: Detoxifies & Purifies Skin
🌿 Brightening Vitamin C Face Wash
🌿 Exfoliating Apricot Face Scrub
🌿 Aloe and Cucumber Refreshing Body Lotion

I could go on and on about these products — I am a huge fan!

That empty basket in the photo was filled 2.5 times, with supplements for a year, plus an incredible amount of personal products and gifts for several friends. Total cost: $185 US.

PS: Their plastic packaging is recyclable.

When we work with nature and have a reciprocal relationship with this beautiful planet, all species benefit.

The quantity and quality of fresh fruit and vegetables you can buy in India for 410 rupees is astounding to me.

As the sun rises in Chennai, India, fruit and vegetable street vendors set up their stands. Their produce is fresh and lies openly on blankets and tables and in bins. No plastic containers or wrap are used.

You simply pick up a basket, fill it with the items you want, and hand it to the vendor, who weighs each type of produce and tells you the price. We bring our own reusable bag; the produce is placed inside, money is exchanged, and we walk home.

This is such a beautiful way to buy food. Today, we purchased watermelon, carrots, tomatoes, white radish, green bananas, okra, green beans, limes, green chilies, ginger, and herbs—price: 410 rupees, the equivalent of $4.30 U.S.

Even though we earn in dollars, the price difference between food in the United States and food in India is staggering.

Buying only what you need, fresh and local, just makes sense. No plastic is necessary. What a boost to the environment and our bodies.

When we return to the United States after spending time in India, we experience sticker shock and miss our daily produce-buying ritual.

I think we can do so much better in the United States. Good, healthy food should not be unaffordable, wrapped in suffocating plastic, or dosed with pesticides.

Trees are one of a city’s greatest assets. Yet, in many cities, trees are being cut down in the name of development.

Replacing trees with concrete is a lose-lose situation, for both the natural world and for humans.

What many people forget is that we are part of nature, not separate from nature. If we operated with the understanding of interconnectedness, rather than superiority, to the natural world, we would work with it, not against it.

Here are a few benefits of trees:

🌳 Cleaner Air: Trees absorb pollutants and carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
🌳 Provide Shade and Reduce Heat
🌳 Flood Mitigation: Tree roots and the soil absorb rainwater.
🌳 Support Wildlife: Providing food, shelter, and nesting places for birds, insects, and other animals.
🌳 Fight Climate Change: Trees store carbon and help reduce the amount of CO2 in the air.
🌳 Add Beauty
🌳 Improve Mental Health: Access to trees can reduce stress and support relaxation and wellness.
🌳 Save Energy: Trees shade buildings and homes, reducing the need for air conditioning.
🌳 Provide Food: Let’s plant food forests in our common spaces and schools and share the wealth of trees.

There are many more reasons trees are essential and why they should be a priority, not an afterthought to be disregarded.

Trees are a city’s natural infrastructure and should be treated with the respect they deserve for the sake of both the natural world and humankind.

It was beyond refreshing to be in Sofia, Bulgaria, and see the abundance of trees in the city. I felt like I could literally breathe easier — the city was so green and full of trees.

May more cities follow suit.

Nature never skips the foundation.

Before there is a towering tree, there are years of unseen root growth.

Before there are fresh fruits and vegetables, there is healthy, pesticide-free, balanced soil.

Natural ecosystems work because they are built from the ground up.

Money works the same way.

Most people chase the visible results—income, luxury, and fancy vacations.

Yet, few people focus on building the system that creates those results. And, to me, the most important outcome of all: freedom.

Learn the money skills. Better your relationship with money. Add responsibility, consistency, and time.

Wealth isn’t built through one big moment. It’s built by creating an ecosystem where everything supports everything else.

Build the system. The results will follow.
