Economic equity and access to opportunity are not new ideas.

Florida leaders like Eartha White and Harry T. Moore were building systems, strengthening networks, and advocating for economic fairness decades ago.

Today, FSMSDC remains committed to that same work — providing the tools, resources, and connections businesses need to thrive, even in challenging environments.

Thriving small and minority businesses strengthen cities, states, and our national economy.

Rev. Jesse Jackson’s economic justice efforts in the 1960s and 1970s helped spark the modern supplier diversity movement by urging corporations to invest in and purchase from minority-owned businesses. This momentum led to the creation of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) in 1972, establishing a national framework to connect minority businesses with corporate opportunities.

Today, NMSDC and its affiliates continue advancing economic equity through inclusive procurement and supplier development.

A new chapter is underway.

As Interim President & CEO, Monica Cupid is focused on what matters most to our community: real opportunities, stronger business capacity, and meaningful relationships that lead to growth.

We’re building clearer pathways to procurement access, expanding capacity-building support, and strengthening connections across our network—so our members can scale, compete, and succeed.

Now is the time to reengage.
More opportunities are on the way.

FSMSDC, with the support of Honda, was proud to host the Women and Girls in Transportation Initiative (WITI) at Brightline’s Miami Central Station.

Thirteen young women from Overtown Youth Center and Girl Power participated in a behind-the-scenes experience exploring careers in transportation, high-speed rail, technology, and customer service. Led by Brightline’s Juan Arranga, students gained insight into rail operations, technology platforms, and transferable career skills.

This collaboration with Honda, Brightline, Girl Power, and Overtown Youth Center reflects a shared commitment to workforce development, equity, and inspiring the next generation of transportation leaders.
