The other day, a customer walked into my laundry office. After dropping his clothes, he said: “Please don’t use washing machine. Use your hand. Washing machines spoil clothes.”
I didn’t argue with him. I just smiled and let him finish. Then I asked: “Sir, do you use electricity in your house?” He said yes.
I explained: “Electricity is not bad. But when it is misused, it can shock, burn, or even kiiiill. Yet nobody says electricity is bad because when used properly, it gives us light, charges our phones, powers our homes, and makes life easier.”
Then I continued: “The same thing applies to air conditioners. AC is not bad, but if you misuse it sleeping directly under it for too long, setting it at the wrong temperature, or failing to service it — it can cause health problems like catarrh, cold, or pneumonia. Yet we all know that when used properly, AC gives us comfort.”
Finally, I said: “It is the same with washing machines. Washing machines don’t spoil clothes. What spoils clothes is wrong handling, wrong detergent, wrong settings, or lack of professional knowledge. But when used the right way, a washing machine protects clothes, saves time, and makes laundry more efficient.”
The truth is this: tools are never the problem. Misuse and ignorance are the real enemies.
So, my encouragement to all dry cleaners and skilled workers:
👉 Don’t let customers talk down your tools.
👉 Keep educating people about your profession.
👉 And above all, keep improving your knowledge.
Because professionalism is not just about doing the work — it’s about understanding the work and teaching others. That’s how respect for your craft will grow
