Does Long-Term Care Insurance Automatically Pay When You Need Care?

Not necessarily. Many families are surprised to learn that having a long-term care insurance policy does not automatically mean benefits begin as soon as someone moves into an assisted living community or nursing home.

Most policies require the insured to meet specific eligibility criteria before benefits are paid.

Here are the most common benefit triggers:

✔️ Unable to perform at least 2 of the 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) without substantial assistance:
• Bathing
• Dressing
• Eating
• Toileting
• Transferring (moving in and out of a bed or chair)
• Continence

OR

✔️ A severe cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, that requires substantial supervision to protect the person’s health and safety.

In addition, many policies include:

• A waiting (elimination) period before benefits begin.
• A requirement that care be provided by qualified or licensed providers, depending on the policy.
• Coverage limits based on the policy’s daily or monthly benefit amount and maximum benefit period.

Every policy is different. Coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, and eligible care settings vary by contract. Reviewing the policy before a crisis can help families understand what benefits may be available.

At MD Senior Placement Solutions, we help families understand their long-term care options and navigate the senior care journey with confidence. @
