Everyone tells you to open a business bank account. Nobody tells you which kind.

And that choice can matter more than you think.

The bank that’s right for a business that’s just getting started may not be the same bank that makes sense when you’re ready to scale or pursue larger funding.

A national bank can give you broader recognition and room to grow. A regional bank can give you something different — a relationship with people who understand your local market. And a community bank may be a better fit when you’re newer and still building your business profile.

That’s why I don’t want you choosing a bank just because it’s closest to you or because everybody knows the name.

Think about where your business is now, where you’re going, and what kind of relationship you need from your bank along the way.

The biggest bank isn’t automatically the best bank for your business.

Your grant story isn’t the place to tell them everything you’ve ever been through, Mija.

I know your business means a lot to you, but remember who’s reading it. Grant reviewers are going through application after application, so your story needs to make the important part easy to find.

Give them a reason to care, a clear picture of the problem you’re solving, and why your work matters — without making them dig through your entire journey to find it.

Your story can be powerful without being long.
