Honored to attend the inauguration of Stephen W. McLaughlin as the 14th president of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

Moments like this remind us that leadership transitions are more than ceremonial—they are a powerful bridge between past, present, and future.

From the historic setting of the Great Hall to the inspiring voices of students, faculty, and national leaders—including keynote remarks from Kaye Husbands Fealing and greetings from Manhattan, Borough President, Brad Hoylman-Sigal—the day reflected the very essence of Cooper Union: excellence, creativity, and purpose.

Congratulations, President McLaughlin. I look forward to all that lies ahead under your leadership.

What a win for truth, inclusion, and every student’s right to feel seen and supported. 👏🏽📚✨

This moment reminds us that honest teaching and equitable education matter—now and always. Grateful for the educators and advocates who stood up for what’s right. 💙

🤔 What Happened

A federal court ruled that a policy from the U.S. Department of Education that tried to limit efforts in schools is no longer valid and cannot be enforced.

This means schools and colleges are not required to follow that restrictive guidance anymore.

🗣️Why This Case Was Important

The policy made many teachers and schools afraid that:
• Talking about race, history, gender, or inequality could get them in trouble
• Supporting diverse students might be considered “illegal”
• They could lose funding or face penalties

Educators and civil rights groups sued, arguing the rule was unclear and unfair.

The court agreed.

Ultimately…
The court blocked a rule that tried to limit DEI in schools.

And as a result:
• Teachers can teach honestly
• Students can learn about real history
• Schools can support all kids fairly
• Education is more inclusive and balanced

This decision strengthens public education by protecting truth, fairness, and student success.

🕊️ Honoring a Life of Courage, Faith, and Purpose

We honor the life and legacy of Reverend Jesse Jackson, who passed on Tuesday at the age of 84. He was not only a tireless advocate for the Civil Rights Movement, but one of its most powerful and dynamic voices. He spoke boldly for the poor and marginalized—on voting rights, housing, dignity, and justice—never wavering in his commitment to humanity.

We reflect with deep gratitude on one of his many visits to South Florida and his engagement with our mother, The Honorable Larcenia J. Bullard. He recognized her dedication to reaching every corner of her community, ensuring no one was left behind. By the end of that trip, he affectionately gave her the nickname “Pockets,” because she never left a single pocket of the community unattended.

We will never forget that moment. More importantly, we will never forget the impact he has made on our country, our history, and our hearts.

“You must not surrender. You may or may not get there, but just know that you’re qualified… We must never surrender. America will get better and better. Keep Hope alive.”

Rest in power and peace, Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Your voice, your courage, and your hope will live on forever.

Today we celebrate Mrs. Thelma Vernell Anderson Gibson on her 99th birthday.

She is the oldest living graduate of George Washington Carver Senior High School and a true trailblazer in Miami Dade County. Mrs. Gibson was the first colored Assistant Supervisor of the Miami Dade County Department of Health and a lifelong advocate for public health and underserved communities.

She helped found the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami Dade County, played a key role in forming the Miami Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, and later founded The Thelma Gibson Health Initiative.

At 99, she is living history. Miami is better because of her.
