One thing I’ve learned throughout my career is that not everyone you work with is meant to have a personal place in your life.
And sometimes, that lesson comes as a reminder when you least expect it.
I’ve always believed in treating people with kindness, giving others grace, and building positive relationships in the workplace. But I’ve also learned that not everyone communicates with the same level of respect, handles conflict in a healthy way, or has your best interests at heart.
Recently, I was reminded that you can approach situations with good intentions and still be met with negativity, misunderstanding, or disrespect.
And that’s okay. How someone chooses to treat you is not something you can always control. How you choose to respond is.
After nearly two decades in this industry, I’m still learning that protecting my peace doesn’t mean compromising my professionalism.
I can be kind and still have boundaries.
I can wish someone well and still keep my distance.
I can choose not to engage and still stand up for myself.
Not every situation deserves a reaction, and not every relationship deserves continued access to you.
Professionalism isn’t about being everyone’s friend. It’s about maintaining your integrity, even when others don’t extend the same courtesy.
Have you ever had a workplace experience that completely changed how you approach relationships with coworkers?
