Private Art Consulting was founded on the belief that some of the strongest opportunities often exist between industries, disciplines, and relationships that might otherwise never intersect.

Six years later, the interdisciplinary approach that was once questioned has become one of PAC’s defining strengths.

PAC Founder, CEO & Principal Art Advisor Dana Cohen recently spoke with Voyage Miami about how the consultancy’s model developed, why Miami has become such an important part of the company’s story, and what continues to shape its evolution.

The interview also offers a look at how PAC approaches conversations that may begin with an artwork, a collection, a project, a partnership, a brand, or a challenge that needs solving, and how those conversations can evolve into something much bigger.

Can you imagine something as adorable as these sculptures barking controversy? 🙀

This permanent waterfront public art project opened in 2023 just outside of Pérez Art Museum Miami and Frost Science Museum in Miami. It was championed by Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo to celebrate the city’s love of animals.

Here’s what makes this art installation so special:

⚪️ It consists of 52 oversized aluminum dog and cat sculptures, each individually painted by different South Florida artists.

⚪️ No two are the same.

⚪️ They’re colorful, playful, and engaging.

⚪️ Local artists were commissioned to bring the project to life.

⚪️ Every sculpture represents a different aspect of Miami’s neighborhoods, cultures, and communities.

When the installation was unveiled, one detail sparked debate. The reported price tag: about $896,000 ‼️

Projects like this make people question the value of public art.

⚪️ How to measure the value of something that encourages people to stop, engage, take photos, and create memories?

⚪️ What is the value of an experience that becomes synonymous with a place that people associate with a destination and want to return to because it made them feel something?

Three years later, people are still talking about these sculptures. Every time you walk by, both locals and tourists are interacting with them.

Maybe that’s the point.

The best way to measure the success of public art is if the artwork did the specific thing it was designed to do for the people it was meant to reach.

When evaluating public art, what should matter most? Was the project a success? Who decides?

What makes this particular Basquiat collection so special?

Most people know Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) because it set an auction record in 2017. What’s most striking about Kenneth C. Griffin’s Basquiat exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami Miami isn’t the one record-breaking painting. It’s the intention behind the whole collection.

⚪️ Griffin assembled a Basquiat collection centered on works from 1982 -1985, the period widely regarded as Basquiat’s most important.

⚪️ Each work adds context to the next, creating a narrative and point of view that no single painting, regardless of its value, could achieve on its own.

⚪️ Together, the works take on a level of historical and institutional significance that extends beyond any individual painting.

That’s what makes this exhibition significant.

Owning extraordinary artwork is one thing. Building a collection of 10 artworks (nine paintings and one sculpture) that can sustain a year-long museum exhibition is something else.

Many artists assume they have an access problem.

Besides working with collectors, brands, and trade professionals, we also work with a select number of professional artists on long-term strategic growth. The first thing we do is perform a thorough evaluation and determine the actual bottlenecks.

One of the most common messages artists send out is some variation of “Hey, look at my work. Perhaps it’s a fit for your clientele.” 🥱

Unfortunately, these vague messages rarely accomplish what the artist hopes they will and that first impression matters.

What we typically find is those who’ve secured meaningful representation or consistently attract serious collectors have something in common:

⚪️ They’re memorable.
⚪️ They’re easy to differentiate.
⚪️ They’re discoverable in the right context.
⚪️ They’re impossible to overlook.
⚪️ They’ve built something the market actively wants to find.

So, before spending energy searching for someone to introduce you to the “right” people, ask yourself if you’d rather chase introductions or focus on being pursued.

Access amplifies. It does not create demand.

One of the largest underwater installations features 330 sculptures submerged just 5 meters below the surface at Divi Little Bay, Philipsburg, Sint Maarten.

Only accessible by boat and off-limits to outside
swimmers, each sculpture by , is made from a pH-neutral material. Designed to act as an artificial reef to encourages coral growth, marine life, and safe habitats for juvenile fish, this doesn’t extract from its environment.

The installations tell the story of the island. Local residents were even used as models, grounding the work in real community identity.

It’s locally operated. Revenue is reinvested into education, conservation, and research.

It’s not just art in the ocean, it’s for the ocean. 🌊

These are not matchsticks. 🔥🕯️

At first glance, they’re visually clean and minimal. Then it hits you. 🧯

What looks like oversized humanoid matchsticks burned at the tip and then quickly extinguished is “Matchstick Men.” These sculptures were created using molds of real faces, then cast in materials like wax, wood, and resin.

Slightly burned out. Slightly over it. Very relatable.

We know burnout is real and things may not always be as they seem. That’s the tension Stiller plays with so well.
