On a recent afternoon, Tim Hoag stood in the arrivals area at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport looking for a truck driver. The man he was waiting for, Bill McMahon, had previously driven trucks for Hoag’s company, Copeland Trucking of Fridley, and Hoag made a deal to lure him back. Because McMahon now lives in California, Hoag agreed to let him drive out there once a month, even though Copeland avoids jobs in California because of the state’s burdensome regulations.

Bill Kozek, president of Navistar’s North America truck and parts, has been promoted to president of truck and parts, and is adding global/export truck and parts sales, product planning and Navistar Defense to his current responsibilities. Persio Lisboa, senior vice president and chief procurement officer, has been promoted to president of operations and is now also responsible for product development, manufacturing, and global businesses. XPO Logistics Loss Widens

Financial losses for XPO Logistics Inc. widened in the third quarter of the year despite it increasing total revenue from the same time a year ago, following several acquisitions, but company officials insist they are headed toward profitability. The Connecticut-based freight transportation provider reported a net loss of $11.7 million for the quarter, compared with a net loss of $6 million for the same period in 2013, while its loss per share declined to 23 cents from 28 cents during the same time.

Commercial Vehicle Demand in U.S., Canada Continues to Strengthen http://wp.me/p4W6Tl-dS

Demand for commercial vehicles in the U.S. and Canada continues to strengthen, though used commercial vehicle registrations still outnumber new registrations. That’s according to Gary Meteer, director, commercial vehicle solutions for vehicle industry analyst firm IHS Automotive, during a presentation about the state of the commercial vehicle market on Wednesday at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo in Las Vegas. Not surprisingly, the business community largely drives the recovery in the commercial vehicle market in the U.S.

Orders for Class 8 trucks in October jumped 87% over the previous month to 45,795 units, the second highest amount of orders ever recorded in a single month, according to the latest FTR report. Orders were 76% higher year over year. ACT research also published a report on October truck orders expanding its focus to include Class 5-7. It found that the past 12 months have been the strongest such period since January 2007.
