New seawalls are coming to help protect our cities and marine life! 🌱🦪

FIU researchers are testing textured, modular seawalls made with BIOCAP tile, designed to reduce wave energy and create homes for marine life like oysters, barnacles, and sponges 🦠🌊.

These innovative seawalls are set to be installed in spring 2025 as part of a two-year pilot project 🗓️, and could change the way we think about coastal protection 🌎💡.

DID YOU KNOW? Coastal communities, like ours, depend on natural barriers, such as mangroves and coral reefs, to help protect the shoreline and limit the impacts of flooding caused by intense storms and seasonal hurricanes. The cost-effective, environmentally friendly concrete SEAHIVE™ structures pictured were installed within Wahoo Bay to act as a shoreline protection system. These honey-comb structures disperse wave energy helping limit flooding and erosion. 🏝️🔬
