I grew up in Texas in the 70s, surrounded by adults who rarely questioned the casual bigotry woven into everyday conversation. Then in the late 70’s (and early 80’s in the form of reruns) I saw Rob Reiner as Meathead on All in the Family, standing up to Archie Bunker about politics and prejudice, and it changed something in me. It was the first time I saw someone on TV defending compassion and fairness against ignorance right to its face.
Watching those debates between Meathead and Archie felt like watching two worlds collide. One represented the mindset I grew up around, the other represented what I hoped people could be. It wasn’t just talk about politics, it was about empathy and justice, and Reiner’s calm conviction made that moral stance feel not only possible but necessary.
That show was a quiet awakening. It proved that challenging racism and standing up for every kind of person was not only right but profoundly human. Seeing Meathead confront Archie made me realize there were people who refused to accept hate as normal. That belief, that kindness belongs at the heart of every political choice, has stayed with me ever since. Thank you Rob Reiner! And I do plan on having fun storming the castle.
