The call came in just after 2 a.m.
A sprinkler head in the ceiling of a Montclair, NJ boutique clothing store had failed — no fire, no alarm trigger, just a slow pressure failure that nobody caught until water started sheeting down through the exposed ductwork and pooling across 1,400 square feet of hardwood flooring.
By the time our crew arrived, the water had already wicked into the base of every display fixture, crept beneath the subfloor seams, and started climbing the drywall behind the fitting rooms.
We mapped the full moisture boundary before a single piece of equipment touched the floor. Thermal imaging showed the spread extended 6 feet behind what was visible to the eye — well past the fitting rooms and into the back stock area.
Affected baseboards came out. A section of flooring near the front window was lifted. Containment went up around the stock area. Six industrial air movers and three dehumidifiers went to work.
The owner arrived at 6 a.m. to find her store mid-mitigation, not mid-panic. Victor walked her through every moisture reading, every affected zone, every step of what came next.
Documentation was complete before the adjuster's first visit.
This is what 2 a.m. looks like when you're prepared for it.
