The day when disability rights activists ditched their wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices to crawl into the Capitol in Washington, DC to demand their civil rights be recognized and codified into law. ADA Watch/CDRJ mourns the passing of civil rights leader Reverand Jesse Jackson

Honoring the legacy of Reverend Jesse Jackson requires recognizing his role as a bridge-builder who understood that the struggle for civil rights is indivisible.

This iconic 1989 photograph of Reverend Jackson and Justin Dart Jr. on Capitol Hill captures a pivotal moment in the fight for the Americans with Disabilities Act. It serves as a powerful reminder that the movement for disability rights has always been a fundamental part of the broader human rights movement.

By standing in solidarity with Justin and the disability community during the ADA hearings, Jackson helped demonstrate that justice is not a limited resource, but a shared goal. His activism was rooted in the principle that equality for one group is inextricably linked to equality for all.

Today, we reflect on his life of service and the intersectional path he helped forge for future generations of leaders and advocates.
