NATIONAL DOG DAY — HONORING A FIRE SERVICE TRADITION
Today is National Dog Day, and we’re taking a look at a four-legged tradition that has been part of the fire service for generations.
Long before diesel engines, air horns and flashing lights, fire apparatus was pulled by horses—and Dalmatians had an important job to do.
Their natural ability to work alongside horses made them ideal companions for early fire companies. They would run alongside horse-drawn apparatus, helping clear a path through busy streets, guard the horses and equipment, and keep the horses calm amid the noise, smoke and chaos of a fire scene.
When motorized apparatus eventually replaced horses, the Dalmatian’s role changed—but its place in the firehouse didn’t disappear. They remained companions, mascots and one of the most recognizable symbols of the fire service.
And dogs continue to serve alongside firefighters today in many different ways—from accelerant detection and search work to fire prevention education, therapy and, sometimes most importantly, simply being the loyal friend waiting back at the station.
