And just like that, you're headed out the door.

In the fire service, a full night's sleep isn't always realistic. Between overnight calls, rotating shifts, training, and everything waiting at home, quality sleep can be hard to come by.

But here's something we don't talk about enough: Sleep deprivation isn't just about feeling tired.

It can affect your reaction time, judgment, concentration, mood, and physical performance. In a profession where split-second decisions matter, those effects shouldn't be ignored.

We know the calls aren't going to stop. And nobody expects firefighters to magically get eight uninterrupted hours every night.

But there are things you can do:

✅ Prioritize sleep and recovery between shifts whenever possible.

✅ Keep your sleeping environment cool, dark, and quiet.

✅ Be mindful of caffeine intake, especially before planned sleep.

✅ Take advantage of appropriate rest opportunities when they're available.

✅ Recognize when fatigue is affecting your performance, and look out for your crew.

You maintain your apparatus. You inspect your gear. You check your equipment.

Don't forget about the person responsible for using all of it.

Rest isn't being lazy. Recovery isn't optional maintenance. It's part of being ready for the next call.

This week, Scott and Mike have been working in the Harlem-Roscoe area, conducting pump testing on 28 fire trucks from area departments.

We want to extend a special THANK YOU to Harlem-Roscoe Fire for generously allowing us to use their training center as our base of operations. Having a central location to set up equipment and work with multiple departments makes a big difference, and we truly appreciate the hospitality and support!

Firefighting isn't a bodybuilding competition. It's a job that demands strength, endurance, mobility, and the ability to perform when you're already exhausted.

Think about what firefighters actually do:
✅ Crawl through tight spaces
✅ Carry heavy equipment up stairs
✅ Pull charged hose lines
✅ Climb ladders
✅ Drag a victim to safety
✅ Get up off the ground while wearing full turnout gear

That's functional fitness—training your body for the movements and physical demands you face on the fireground.

And remember, functional fitness isn't just about performing better today. It's about reducing injury risk, protecting your body, and staying capable throughout your career.
