When people think about AI in Learning & Development (L&D), the first thing that usually comes to mind is content creation—writing courses faster, generating quizzes, or building slide decks.

I’m sitting here listening to the wind.

Windy days can feel a little unsettling. You hear it gust, feel it shake things around—and you know the kind of damage it can do. There’s something about it that always makes me pause.

But at the same time…it’s kind of incredible.

You can’t see it, but you can absolutely feel its impact. It’s powerful. It moves things. It changes things.

And oddly enough, it reminds me of training.

Good training works the same way.

You don’t always see it right away—but you see what it does:
👉 More confident employees
👉 Better decisions
👉 Stronger performance
👉 Smoother processes

It can shift the direction of a team without making a lot of noise.

And just like wind, it can either feel disruptive…or it can be harnessed into something incredibly powerful.

The difference? Intention.

When training is thoughtful and aligned, it doesn’t just “blow through”—it creates real movement and lasting impact.

So maybe the question is:
Is your training creating noise…or creating momentum?

Most employees don’t lack motivation—they lack a clear path.

A professional development plan isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s a roadmap. It answers:

👉 Where am I going?
👉 What skills do I need to get there?
👉 What does success actually look like?

When employees have clarity, something powerful happens—they show up with more confidence, more ownership, and more intention in their work.

And for employers? It removes the guesswork.

Instead of wondering, “Are they growing? Are they engaged? Will they stay?”—you have a shared plan, clear goals, and a way to support progress.

Professional development plans aren’t about checking a box.

They’re about building alignment, trust, and forward momentum.

Because when people know where they’re going, they move differently.

Before you jump into training… pause.

One of the biggest mistakes I see organizations make is investing time and money into training without first understanding what’s actually needed.

That’s where a needs analysis comes in.

A good needs analysis helps you step back and look at the full picture:

• Where are the gaps in performance?
• Are the challenges really about skills—or are there process issues underneath?
• What’s working well that you can build on?

Sometimes the answer is training.

But sometimes it’s unclear processes, missing SOPs, or inefficiencies that no amount of training will fix.

When you take the time to assess first, you:

✔ Focus your training where it truly matters
✔ Avoid wasting resources
✔ Improve operations—not just knowledge

It’s not about doing more training.

It’s about doing the right training… for the right reasons.

If you’re thinking about upskilling your team, start with the question:

“Do we really know what we need?”

Sometimes they are formal and well-documented. Other times, they exist only in people’s heads. But whether we acknowledge them or not, processes are always there, guiding how work gets done.

Before improving operations or investing in training, one of the most important steps is a needs analysis.

It’s tempting to jump straight to solutions — new systems, new processes, or new training programs. But taking the time to step back and look at what’s actually happening in day-to-day operations can reveal where the real gaps are.

A needs analysis helps answer important questions:
• Where are processes slowing things down?
• Are teams spending time on tasks that could be streamlined?
• Is training aligned with the actual skills people need to do their jobs well?

When you start with a clear picture of what’s working and what isn’t, the solutions become much more effective.

Sometimes the best first step toward improvement is simply taking the time to understand the current state.

I’m sitting here looking outside at the sun and blue sky, and with the time change it suddenly feels like there are more hours in the day. Spring does that — it brings a sense of renewal. (Even for those of us who genuinely love winter and the beauty of snow-capped mountains!)

With spring comes that natural moment to pause and think ahead. Where do you want to be by summer? Yes, hopefully somewhere relaxing… maybe even a beach. But professionally speaking, it’s also a great time to think about growth.

Training and professional development might not be the first thing that comes to mind when the weather gets nicer, but this season of renewal is actually the perfect time to ask:

What skills should you or your team be building this year?

Learning shouldn’t stop once we’re in the workforce. Organizations that build continuous learning into their culture are the ones that stay adaptable, competitive, and engaged.

Take a look at your professional development plans. Think about what you want to accomplish this year — and start moving toward it.

Spring is a great time to grow.
