If you’re constantly feeling overwhelmed by clutter, I want you to know something:
The people with the tidiest homes aren’t spending hours cleaning every day.
They’re maintaining systems consistently.
As a Professional Organizer, the #1 thing I see my clients struggle with is waiting until things feel completely out of control before addressing the clutter. The good news? You don’t need to spend your entire weekend cleaning to stay on top of your home.
Here are 5 things I recommend doing every week:
🦉 1. Reset your “hot spots”
Every home has them—the kitchen counter, dining table, entryway, nightstand, or that chair that’s become a second closet. Spend 10 minutes clearing these spaces before they become overwhelming.
🦉 2. Complete one load of laundry from start to finish
Not just washing. Wash, dry, fold, and put away. Half-finished laundry creates visual clutter and makes the whole house feel messier.
🦉 3. Do a quick fridge and pantry check
Toss expired food, wipe up spills, and make a note of what needs to be used soon. This prevents waste and keeps meal planning easier.
🦉 4. Return things to their homes
Walk through your home with a basket and collect items that have wandered. Put them back where they belong. If something never makes it back, that may be a sign it needs a better home.
🦉 5. Let go of 5 things
Five items. Every week. That’s it. A shirt you don’t wear, a duplicate kitchen gadget, old paperwork, expired products, random clutter. Small consistent decluttering adds up quickly.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is preventing overwhelm.
If you’ve worked with me before, save this as your weekly reset checklist. If you’re just getting started on your organizing journey, this is a great place to begin.
Which of these do you already do each week?
