Milwaukee's legacy is built on water. We owe our existence to our position on the Great Lakes, home to the world's largest source of accessible freshwater, and our future is intricately bound in protecting this precious resource.

🌊 In that spirit, The Water Council is proud this to announce ReFRESH: Resilience in Freshwater, a fresh new take on our annual summit.

ReFRESH is not a typical water conference. It is a curated innovation forum for leaders who are ready to refresh how progress happens in water. We are bringing together decision-makers across the public, private and academic sectors to explore honest conversations, radical collaboration and a commitment to action.

💧 The venue: Discovery World, just steps from the shores of Lake Michigan.

💧 The moderator: Travis Loop, founder of Waterloop and a creative water storyteller.

What if you could use renewable energy to bring clean water to areas that desperately need it?

That's the concept behind Geotek Water Solutions, the winner of our fall 2025 Tech Challenge. Its flagship technology uses naturally occurring low-temperature geothermal heat to power the purification process, enabling clean water production with significantly lower energy demand than conventional systems.

Founder Ichor Joshua was motivated after he nearly lost his life to contaminated water in his home community in Nigeria. Now, the company is focused on scaling through modular deployments, starting with pilot systems and expanding through clustered installations for industrial, agricultural and community-scale use across energy-constrained regions.

"Winning the Tech Challenge is a major validation of both our technical direction and our long-term vision. It strengthens our credibility with partners, utilities, and investors and accelerates our ability to move from pilot testing to broader deployment," he said.

"Just as importantly, it connects us directly with a network of industry leaders and practitioners whose insight will help refine our system design, monitoring capabilities and deployment models."

From Nigeria to Wisconsin, our latest Tech Challenge winners are solving some of the most challenging issues in water! 🎉 🌍

Geotek Water Solutions of Jos, Nigeria, is the first African company to win the Tech Challenge with its use of geothermal energy to offer reliable, low-cost water treatment to off-grid and rural customers, providing resilient water infrastructure to emerging markets and helping expand access to safe and clean water.

Service ID of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, is our runner-up. Its technology allows water utilities to identify lead pipes from homeowner-submitted photos using AI. This eliminates the need for field inspections when completing lead service line inventories, helping communities meet lead and copper rule requirements and protect public health.

The Water Council issued a broad solicitation this session for water quality solutions, and our network delivered! We are inspired by the potential of these technologies to help deliver clean, reliable freshwater to people around the world. Our thanks to program sponsors A. O. Smith Corporation, Badger Meter, Watts Water Technologies and Xylem.

These are unquestionably uncertain times, especially for nonprofits. For its Women in Business issue, BizTimes Milwaukee asked six women leaders, including our own Karen J. Frost, about the key to leading through uncertainty. Here's what Karen had to say:

“As a small nonprofit, we are no stranger to uncertainty. In these times, we must focus on our core strengths. It’s my job as a leader to draw out those strengths from my team and our programs and keep connected with our members to ensure we are providing value.”
