A great visual of the positive and negative effects color can produce, by my colleague Lauren Tomlin.
(P.S. If you're in or around Tennessee, go see her!)
Quite often I get asked, “Why does it matter what color I wear? I love color!” I always reply, “Me too! I just don’t want to look old, and tired.”
Kathryn Kalisz, the founder of Sci/Art, writes about the optical effects of color harmony. She says, “Colors in harmony with a skin tone bring life and vitality to a person’s coloring. When a test color harmonizes with the skin’s undertone, many dramatic changes occur on the face. Surface coloration such as blemishes, blotches, shadows, facial hair and freckles are minimized. There is an immediate smoothing of the complexion. Facial features such as eyes, lips and bone structure are more defined. The skin looks clearer and more radiant, hair shines, eyes sparkle, teeth look whiter and the smile is brighter. There is an immediate modeling effect that takes place. Focus is drawn to the center of the face making the skin appear firmer and the person thinner. The over-all look is healthier, slimmer, younger, more vivacious, interesting and exciting.”
“Opposing colors fight against each other. One will win-one will lose… Shadows on the face, fine lines, dark circles under the eyes, blemishes and blotches are always in color tones that are opposite of the skin’s color undertone. Test colors that are in opposition to the skin’s undertone will automatically harmonize with surface flaws and strengthen them. At the same time they will weaken the color undertone of the face and visually seem to break the face in to separate pieces. There is a negative grey or green cast that appears over the skin, which makes the client look older or ill.”
Look at what a difference the correct tone makes for my client. (These pictures were taken in the exact same location, lighting, and camera, within seconds of each other.)
