Itzel’s shirt says it all.

In November 2018, just after her 8th birthday, Itzel started to have unexplained stomach pain. In the days that followed, she also started experiencing headaches, fevers and a general lack of energy. Her pediatrician immediately noticed that her liver and spleen were enlarged and sent her to the Children’s Wisconsin Emergency Department. Within two hours, she received the devastating diagnosis: leukemia.

In the two years since, Itzel has come to the MACC Fund Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders just about every week to see Dr. Richard Tower and receive treatment. But last week, Itzel had her final chemotherapy injection, and next month she’ll take her last oral dose. Then, after two long years, her treatment will be over and she’ll ring the bell!

Mom said, “We love Children’s Wisconsin. The doctors, nurses and staff are amazing. They gave the best care to my daughter and are family to us now!”
