Exhibit #4 📍 UW–Milwaukee Cartography Room
Fun fact: it’s the second largest cartography collection in the U.S. the Library of Congress is #1.
Total serendipity moment… I was on campus presenting in the library, and literally steps away was the cartography room featuring an Ancient Egyptian display for art students in honor of Black History Month ✨
I’ve always been fascinated by mapmaking because maps tell you less about geography and more about the people who created them.
How the map is oriented, the countries scale, what’s in the center. It shows someone’s worldview. Their nationalism, their trade routes, their expedition paths…
A good reminder that we are viewing the world through someone else’s lens.
And sometimes, all it takes is wandering into the room next door to see it differently. 🐝✨
