For each qualified major gift prospect in your portfolio you’ll need to develop a strategy – a planned approach to relationship cultivation and solicitation.

This is the defining moment for the most successful major gift programs I’ve witnessed and coached.

In the discussion of prospect strategy, you quickly get a sense of some important characteristics (present or missing) about the program and the field staff, namely:

🎯 Personal comfort in talking about money
🎯 The degree to which the staff is relationship focused or sales oriented
🎯 Able to see and articulate the path of a joyfully co-constructed gift investment invitation
🎯 Skill with question development and intentional listening
🎯 Clear knowledge (even intuition) about what answers need to surface in the relationship before knowing with confidence that the time is right to invite investment
🎯 Time management

Strategy type #3 – innovation (or is it reinvention?). 💡🌟 I’ll leave to others the debate about which is the better posture, innovation or reinvention. Right now, I just want to note a 3rd common type of business strategy.

I sometimes cringe at the overuse of the word innovation because it evokes for most of us the implicit requirement of the creative visionary leader as the promised source of all new ideas and approaches. I lean toward reinvention because I also subscribe to the belief that everything we need is here right now. Reinventing what’s here somehow seems less daunting and more collaborative.

Regardless of the label, make sure you’re consciously embracing this type of strategy (among others) as you envision your future work. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 ‘𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆.’

This involves fostering psychological safety and team conditions that encourage experimentation and being comfortable [through reflection!!] with failure as a path to success. Such a posture requires leaders to be forward-thinking, open to being changed, and skilled in navigating uncertainty.

A common focus for strategy is growth. 🚀🌱 How can we nurture and significantly grow something that’s already working, something important to us? When focusing on expansion and ‘scaling’, growth strategies require visionary leaders who can identify new markets, services, or products. It's about ambitious goal-setting and risk-acceptance. Leaders must excel at sensing the marketplace, decision-making, and—much more important to success today--strategic partnerships.

It’s not just growth for growth's sake; it's strategic, calculated expansion.

Incremental growth goals don’t require much shift. Significant growth goals require a new posture toward strategy a new commitment among leaders.

I like Kevin Cashman's simple and powerful definition of leadership. "Leadership is authentic influence that creates value."

Because I agree so strongly I see leadership development as first and foremost inner work--working on illuminating and shaping the mindset of people in leadership positions.

But no leader succeeds at a level higher than the entire team. There are no solo climbers!
