At Smart Drone Academy, we train on thermal drones because heat patterns can reveal issues a regular camera may miss. Hands-on practice helps you learn how to capture useful images for inspections, maintenance, and search and rescue.

Milwaukee is talking about its next budget, and Smart Drone Academy is putting an idea on the table.

Put the UAS pilot in the budget.
Define the missions.
Fund the training.
Engage the community.
Measure the results.

UAS simply means drones and the systems used to operate them.

If Milwaukee invests in drone technology, we believe the conversation should be about more than buying drones.

Let’s train people to use them safely.
Let’s identify where they can actually help.
Let’s educate the community.
Let’s create workforce opportunities.
And let’s measure whether the investment works.

SDA is asking to be considered through the appropriate City process as a local training and community-readiness partner — not to own or control the City’s program.

That’s what our Wisconsin Drone Workforce Initiative is about:

Prepare people for the jobs. Prepare communities for the technology.

We have talent right here at home. Let’s build it.

“Why does Smart Drone Academy give away free hobby drones, landing pads and safety vests to kids at our event booths?”

Because sometimes a little fun can open the door to a big future.

A drone gives a child a reason to ask questions, solve problems and explore how technology works. A landing pad helps introduce careful takeoffs and landings. A safety vest starts a conversation about being seen and working safely.

Sure, they’re fun—but they’re also tools to teach and inspire.

Our goal is to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and math right here in Wisconsin. That first flight could get a young person thinking about becoming a pilot, technician, engineer or business owner.

We’re planting seeds for Wisconsin’s next generation of tech professionals and workforce leaders—one curious kid at a time.

Smart Drone Academy is putting in the work here in Wisconsin.

We’re helping people learn drone skills, see career opportunities and understand how this technology can serve their communities.

That work includes:

• Wisconsin Drone Workforce Initiative: Connecting drone education with workforce opportunities.

• Drone Ready Wisconsin: Community education on safety, privacy and responsible drone use.

• Drone Discovery Labs: Hands-on introductions to drone technology.

• Training for working adults: Helping people add drone skills to their business.

• Community support: Volunteer drone demonstrations and aerial support for local nonprofits.

We’re also developing school and veteran partnerships, exploring drone + GIS + AI collaboration, and proposing our Safe Streets, Protected Privacy Initiative for a limited community safety pilot.

Some efforts are underway. Others are proposals we’re working to build with the right partners. All share one goal:

Prepare people for the jobs. Prepare communities for the technology.

If your Wisconsin business, school or community group wants to get involved, let’s talk.

Safe Streets, Protected Privacy Initiative

We want safer streets while protecting privacy. SDA proposes a tightly limited pilot in designated areas and scheduled times, using drones with lights and speakers to deter theft and alert residents. This initiative would benefit many communities by helping address safety concerns while respecting residents’ privacy. Trained city staff, coordinating with alderpersons and block watch captains, would operate and monitor them; volunteers could not operate drones or access live feeds without specific authorization.

Drones would transmit live video only when needed for a specific safety concern and would never record or store it, use facial recognition, or collect unnecessary information. Access would be restricted under clear rules, with public reporting and regular independent reviews—improving safety without routine surveillance or filming everyone on the block. 414-323-5525
