The job market isn’t giving laid off professionals a clean landing right now.

Fewer openings. More competition. Longer search timelines. And a lot of the people feeling it hardest aren’t entry level. They’re mid to senior level with years of experience and a role that just got eliminated.

So what’s actually working?

Fractional work is one option most people haven’t heard of. It means offering your expertise part-time or on contract to companies that need a senior function but can’t justify a full-time hire. Fractional COO. Fractional ops lead. Fractional HR director. Two or three clients can add up to a full income without waiting on one company to say yes.

The other thing gaining traction is starting something small. AI has lowered the barrier more than most people realize. Less overhead, fewer people needed to launch, and niche markets that larger companies won’t touch because the revenue ceiling isn’t big enough for them. That ceiling might be exactly right for you.

Neither path is for everyone. But if the traditional search isn’t moving, it might be time to ask whether the traditional path is still the only one.

The skills didn’t disappear when the role did.
