Clackamas Fire Responds to Second-Alarm Brush Fire in Oregon City

Today at approximately 2:12 pm, Clackamas Fire responded to S Holly Ln in Oregon City after a burn pile spread into nearby vegetation, threatening two homes. Upon arrival, crews found grass and blackberry vegetation burning uphill toward nearby structures. Due to the fire’s proximity to homes and the challenging hillside terrain, Incident Command requested a second-alarm brush fire response. Crews coordinated fire attack and established protective lines around the threatened structures while working to contain the fire.

The fire grew to an estimated one-quarter to one-half acre. Firefighters knocked down the fire, extinguished remaining hot spots, and cooled burning material to ensure complete extinguishment. A 24-hour fire watch was established to monitor the area for any signs of rekindling. There were no reported injuries.

A busy day for your Clackamas Firefighters responding to another brush fire, this time in Sandy. BR318, WT371, R301 as well as Estacada Fire’s BR331 and E331 are all on scene of a 0.28 acre bush fire. Forward progress of the fire has been stopped and crews are mopping up.

The Board of Directors of Clackamas Fire District will hold a regular board meeting on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Agenda items for the regular board meeting will include the monthly division reports, determination of board committee and liaison assignments, a request for board approval of the Medical Director Contract, and a request for board approval of the revised board policy manual.

Backyard Burning Opens October 15

Backyard burning season in Clackamas Fire District opens Thursday, Oct. 15, and runs through Dec. 15, weather and air quality permitting.

Before you burn, check the daily burn message by calling 503-742-2945 to confirm whether burning is allowed that day. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) determines burn days and may limit when and how often residents can burn yard debris.

Before lighting a burn pile, remember:
* Only burn on designated burn days.
* Never leave a burn pile unattended.
* Burn only dry, seasoned vegetative material. Wet material creates excess smoke.
* Clear dry vegetation around the pile and expose the dirt to help prevent fire from spreading.
* Keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.
* Keep burn piles no larger than 10 feet by 10 feet by 10 feet.
* Keep burn piles at least 50 feet from buildings.

Retirement Community Saved by Fire Sprinkler System

Twice in five days, fire sprinkler systems controlled fires at the same Milwaukie retirement community, highlighting the importance of having working fire protection systems in place.

On October 8th, Clackamas Fire responded to the community in the 4000 block of SE Vineyard Rd. after a smoke detector activation. Crews arrived to find gray smoke coming from the building and worked to make access to the fire unit on the second floor. The building’s fire sprinkler system had already extinguished most of the fire by the time crews arrived. Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire, assisted with evacuations and helped residents shelter in place. The resident involved was evaluated and treated by American Medical Response but was not transported to a hospital. A fire investigator determined an electrical malfunction involving a lamp had started the fire.

On Oct. 13, crews returned to the same community for another smoke detector and fire sprinkler activation, this time on the third floor. A mattress had caught fire, but the sprinkler system contained the fire until firefighters arrived to fully extinguish it. The resident involved was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Both incidents are reminders that working fire protection systems can make a critical difference during an emergency. Smoke detectors/alarms provide an early warning, while fire sprinkler systems can help control a fire before it spreads.

Clackamas Fire encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms regularly, replace batteries as needed, and make sure smoke alarms are working. If you live in a home with a residential fire sprinkler system, make sure it is maintained and kept clear of obstructions.

Ahead of next week’s joint disaster-response exercise, Clackamas Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue team spent Friday training alongside aviation crews from Pendleton, the U.S. Air Force Reserve 304th Rescue Squadron, and the Oregon Air National Guard 125th Special Tactics Squadron.

Crews practiced loading personnel and USAR equipment onto two CH-47 Chinook helicopters, including a side-by-side, to prepare for next week’s joint exercise.

The training allowed crews to verify weight and balance, become familiar with the aircraft, practice loading configurations and work through the communication and coordination needed to safely operate together.

Next week’s exercise will simulate a destructive tsunami impacting the Oregon coast and a major structural collapse at Camp Rilea. Clackamas Fire’s USAR team, military aviation crews, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, and other partners will work together to search damaged structures, locate and rescue simulated victims, conduct wide-area searches and coordinate the evacuation of victims by helicopter.

Training together before an incident happens helps ensure that when the call comes, crews are ready to work as one team. Dry run complete! More to come on the full training day next week!
