Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad regrets to announce the passing of longtime EMT Joey Fabin.

Joey joined the Rescue Squad in 1990 and quickly became one of the most active volunteers. Soon after joining the Squad, he earned his Advanced Life Support certification and served as Assistant Rescue Squad Captain for 2 years. During this time, he also began working on the Gore Mountain Ski Patrol team, a role he would dedicate himself to for the next 30 years.

In 2001, following the September 11th attacks in New York City, several local ambulance crews were deployed to ground zero. Joey was among four EMTs from Minerva who volunteered to help. After joining a team from Schroon Lake, Joey and his crew stood by at a first aid tent at ground zero for 12 hours, treating injured workers while they searched the pile.

After Joey retired his ALS certification, he remained an EMT and continued to treat patients in the ambulance and on the mountain. He always met challenges with a calm approach and was passionate about his work. Joey was a role model to many and will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with the Fabin family and friends during this difficult time.

The Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad regrets to announce the passing of longtime supporter and friend, Brenda Foley.

For decades, Brenda donated her time to help audit the Department’s books and assist with our annual taxes. She was always available and stepped in whenever help with budgeting was needed. She was a frequent attendee at our fundraisers, a staple in our community, and when firefighting met finances, it was Brenda who answered the tough questions.

It is individuals working behind the scenes, like Brenda, who provide the support that allows our team to continue serving and helping others. Brenda only recently retired from her volunteer work with us.

Our thoughts are with the Foley family and friends at this time.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health. For first responders, the demands of the job—long hours, high-stress incidents, traumatic calls, and the responsibility of protecting others—can take a significant emotional and mental toll. Firefighters, EMS providers, law enforcement officers, and dispatchers often face situations most people never will, yet many struggle in silence.

Bringing awareness to mental health among first responders helps break the stigma surrounding stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and burnout. Seeking help should never be seen as weakness—it is a sign of strength and professionalism. Supporting one another, checking in on coworkers, and creating a culture where mental wellness is prioritized can save lives both on and off the job.

This month, and every month, we stand together to remind our first responders that they are never alone. It is okay to ask for help, to talk about the hard days, and to prioritize your own well-being. Taking care of your mental health is part of taking care of your crew, your family, and your community 💚

Last night we completed our first pumping drill of the year, getting back to the basics that keep our department ready to respond when it matters most. Members reviewed apparatus operations, potable pump usage, drafting, water supply management, and pump panel functions to ensure our skills stay sharp and our teamwork stays strong. Training like this is essential to maintaining efficiency, safety, and confidence on the fireground. A strong start to the year and another reminder that preparation is the foundation of good firefighting.
