Why do ice dams happen and how to prevent them 🧊

Most fingers are pointed to insulation issues when you acquire an ice dam. That is NOT the case.

Most times ice dams are built over a period of time. Typically you have a large snowfall with 6+ inches of snow. All of this snow creates a blanket over your roof vents. When your roof vents are covered where does the heat go? It just says in your attic and continues to heat up your roof.

Once your roof heats up the snow starts to melt. Sounds great right!? Wrong. When the water reaches the overhang of your home where it is no longer heated it freezes! As days go by ice continues to build and build and build. Soon the water has no where to go! It creates a small puddle behind the ice and eventually.. you guessed it, drains right into your home.

How to stop it before it starts ✅

The best way to prevent ice dams is to shovel off your roof! If you are unable to get on your roof, snow rakes work great if used properly.

Using a snow rake, remove the snow about 6-8ft up your roof. Be sure to scrape down to your shingles or there will be a chance of you creating a much larger ice dam!

Removing the snow around your roof vents would also help release that heat held in your attic. No heat = no melted snow = no ice dams.
