The High Priestess - Key 2 of the Tarot
The High Priestess sits in her tower on her throne meditating. She is surrounded by magical symbols; the Torah, the pillars of the Kabala, the moon at her feet. She sit in isolation, apart from the world and daily life.
When I first encountered the High Priestess she was a mystery. Why is she alone? What is she thinking? As I sat with her I began to understand that she represents boundaries. She is the first clearly female figure of the Major Arcana. She and her sister The Empress represent two faces of womanhood. Women are expected to be either nurturing or limiting. The High Priestess sets limits. She says 'these are the consequences of bad behavior, ignore them at your peril.' When she shows up in a reading the message is: maintain clear boundaries, stay on the righteous path or else!
