Have you considered how diverse your social network is? I calculated the percentage of BIPOC connections in my FB network. Shamefully I realized that only 3% of my network claim racial backgrounds different than my own. I'm working on building connections in genuine, meaningful ways to broaden my perspective, deepen my understanding, be a better ally, and empower and amplify the voices of (and opportunities for) BIPOC.

This article by Rebekah Bastian examines why diversity in our professional and social networks is important, and also addresses the need for centered spaces for underrepresented groups. Birds of a feather are important, but flying with different flocks is key for building equity and inclusion. Check out this quick and compelling read.

It is important to be cognizant of the networks we are part of and the diversity that is present within them. Given that our networks influence the way we think and the opportunities we give and receive, lack of diversity can propagate inequitable systems and create echo chambers of perspectives.
