areer that left me dreaming of “something better” – the life I was meant to live. Reimagining myself in this new career was not just a thought exercise. It took hard work, planning, education, growth and a whole lot of humility. But, I am finally living my purpose and that is worth everything. What would be different if you thought of your career as an adventure?

Career lessons from around the campfire.

As you hopefully prepare to spend time outdoors this season, which often includes gathering around a campfire I encourage you to think about…

The practice of starting a campfire: What do you want to spark in your life? Give your energy to?

The practice of extinguishing a fire: What do you want to release? Let go of? No longer hold responsibility for?

Today is just as good a day as any to start something new and to let go of something that’s no longer yours to hold.

Career lessons from ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’…

So many of us find ourselves living in the “shoulds”, doing what we feel or believe we should be doing. And often that means putting our passions and interests aside and being “responsible.” In the day to day that can feel like going through the motions.

And so often, the most difficult, challenging, and traumatic career and life events can be what pushes us beyond the “shoulds”…. Which ultimately leads us back to ourselves. Who we were before the “shoulds” took over. Who we’ve always been but weren’t giving time attention to.

So often, in life and career, the greatest adventure we take might be the one back to ourselves. And I think that’s beautiful.

Thanks to my colleague, Richard Toronto, for encouraging me to rewatch this film!

Going through a career transition can feel lonely at times.

Your friends and loved one will probably try to be there for you but so often they just don’t (and can’t) understand what you’re going through.

This weeks Walk With Me Wednesday is about how I support clients through these moments as a career transition coach. You don’t have to go through this alone.

We spend so much time trying to figure things out in the same environments that keep us busy and focused on what’s right in front of us.

During my own career transition, I found that stepping outside wasn’t just a break. It changed how I was thinking about everything in front of me.

Sometimes the shift you need isn’t a new answer.
It’s a new environment.

The most common barrier to leaving a job or career that people share with me is that they are afraid to surprise their boss or leave others (clients, teammates, etc) hanging.

This week’s Walk With Me Wednesday is about my tips for navigating and moving past this fear.

What’s the story you’re telling about your career?

Not the polished version.
Not the one you think you should tell.

The real one.

The one that makes sense of where you’ve been and helps you see what’s next.

The job market might feel uncertain right now. And that’s real. But having clarity on your career story can help you move forward with more confidence, even in the middle of it.

My latest blog post has simple steps to help you start shaping your story.

What’s your favorite story? Why?

This week’s Walk With Me Wednesday is about being the author of your own career story. This isn’t for networking or an elevator pitch (though it could be)… this is a way to surface the narrative that threads together all of your experiences as well as who you’ve been, who you are today and who you want to be in your next chapter.

Are you running away from something or towards something when you think about a career transition?

It’s valid to be running away from something, but if you don’t know what you’re running toward you could be running really fast in the wrong direction.

Taking the time to know what you’re running toward gives you the confidence that your next role or career stage will take you in the direction of what matters to you.

So often when you’re considering a career transition, the voice of the cynic can be quite loud in your head. It tells you all the reasons it won’t work.

But underneath that voice of cynicism is something you are deeply passionate about. The cynicism is there to protect you from being disappointed BECAUSE you that something matters so much to you.

Try turning down the volume on the cynic so you can get in touch with what’s underneath - your passion.

This week’s is inspired by the book The Art of Possibility.
