“We are living under an authoritarian regime. Every plan, strategy, and tactic must be developed with that reality in mind.”

Grassroots Solutions' principal, Eric Marshall, put down his thoughts in a new post grounded in this prompt. His piece is self-reflective of what it is like to be a professional who has dedicated his career to democracy, voting rights and building power; an urging for our sector; and a call for others to engage in a discussion about how we can collectively move forward under a context that is equal parts unknown and frightening.

We’re living in a new paradigm with shattered norms, broken guardrails, and consolidated power. Trump’s pursuit of unaccountable authority demands a new approach: every strategy must begin with the reality that we are now an authoritarian country.

What: "State and Local Advocacy: What to Prioritize When Everything Feels Urgent" Webinar
When: Wednesday, February 4 at 2:30 pm ET
Featuring: Grassroots Solutions' Christina Kuo

In this current political environment, organizations and their staff can feel overwhelmed about where to start or which strategy or tactic to use when it comes to advocacy work, all while supporter and volunteer education and organizing can fall to the wayside. This tends to lead to organizations jumping right into mobilizing their base without a proper call to action tethered to its broader goals.

This webinar will focus on how you can build a clear plan for your organization that outlines what to build first, what to ignore now, and how to track progress over time. See you then!

🚀 Exciting News from Grassroots Solutions! 🚀

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new website, Built to Last: Developing and Sustaining Organizers!

In a time when the organizing field faces high turnover and burnout, this platform serves as a vital hub for practical solutions and real-world strategies. Led by our very own Katie Fox, Built to Last brings together insights from two major projects designed to help organizations build resilient teams:

The Organizer Learning Project: Discover the life cycle of an organizer and how they learn and grow throughout their careers.
Organizer Staffing Stories of Practice: Explore vivid, affirming stories of organizations that have invested deeply in recruiting, developing, and retaining talent.

Whether you’re an organizer, funder, trainer, or researcher, we hope these resources spark new conversations about how we can strengthen our field for the long haul.

📢 New Report Release: "Tilling the Soil - Cultivating Organizer Learning and Growth" 🌱

Grassroots Solutions is excited to share our new report, "Tilling the Soil: Cultivating Organizer Learning and Growth", where we dive into the findings of the Organizer Learning Project funded by The California Endowment. Over two years, Katie Fox, Margaret Post, and Gigi Barsoum engaged with 75+ organizers from diverse backgrounds, traditions, and communities, to hear their stories about important moments of growth and learning for them throughout their careers and the relationships and experiences that have sustained them.

Using imagery from plant biology, the report illustrates the phases of an organizer’s growth, from the “seeds” of their first experiences in community organizing, to the “blooming” moments of impact and achievement in their careers. It maps the key dimensions of learning and the essential “nutrients” required to sustain this growth over time.

We envision this report as a grounding resource and tool to spark conversations about what more can be done to nurture and sustain organizers in the field. Whether you are an organizer, a funder, or researcher or evaluator, how can you create the conditions to catalyze and support the full range of experiences and relationships that organizers need to grow?

Exciting project alert: With support from The California Endowment, we will be conducting a field-building project to help bridge the gap between organizer and funder learning practices over the course of this next year.

Learning is fundamental to effective organizing. However, we've seen that the disconnect between funder and organizer learning practices, along with the inherent power imbalance between funders and organizers, often forces organizers to adapt to their funders’ priorities and practices.

This project will help bridge the gap between organizer and funder learning practices and will be led by Katie Fox, who has written a short post about what this important work means for the space. Take a look!

Over the next year, we will be conducting a field-building project to help bridge the gap between organizer and funder learning practices.

We've had the ultimate pleasure of working alongside Candace Falk for the last 12 years. This past fall, after months of off-boarding her work, Candace retired. We're sad of course, but know that she's going to be spending her time with her family and granddaughter and we are thrilled for her!

Last year, we were fortunate to add Samonia Jackiewicz to our team as Finance and Operations Manager. With Samonia’s experience, GRS is in a great position to continue serving clients working to positively impact our country and our planet.

Read more about this transition:

Candace, may your retirement be full of joy, health, and love, and Samonia, we’re elated to have you on the team.
