As a therapist I believe in cultivating a therapeutic environment that communicates a container of safety, warmth, comfort. I miss my physical office so much - seeing people in person, sharing physical and energetic space, the ways in which I try to communicate via the environment created. This is what’s visible behind me when I’m with my clients.

This is my “I’m so excited to start learning EMDR Therapy” face. I’m grateful for training over zoom so I can learn this powerful trauma-healing technique. This particular training has a special focus on EMDR Therapy for the perinatal population, but it’s applicable to all kinds of trauma and traumatic memories and images. I’m looking forward to using EMDR with my perinatal clients but in general I’m acutely aware of the amount of trauma we are all dealing with and will be processing on an individual and cultural level for years to come.

“10. Wait for your coffee to arrive

11. Bare your f*cking breast

12. Put that baby on that breast

13. Nurse your g*ddamn baby

14. Because seriously

15. You are out in the world with a baby, at brunch, with coffee

16. And that is a feat in and of itself”

It’s so important to know ahead of time if you’re at higher risk for developing postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar, or any other PMAD (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder). Here’s a list that I share with my clients that includes some of the most common risk factors. Knowledge is power!

Part 1 in a 2-part post about risk factors and prevention for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Part 1 is meant to be a list of risk factors, and in part 2 we’ll talk about what to do if you find yourself with a couple or more of these risk factors. Early in my career, I was at a confer
